If you get rejected from Haas school of business, what are your options?

i have been accepted to UCB as spring admit to College of letters and science

i plan on applying to Haas in my second year (hopefully as spring admit i can fulfill all requirements within 2 years)

i heard the acceptance % to Hass for Berkeley undergrads is only 58%

if i get rejected from Haas, what options do i have:
can i pursue a different major and still graduate within 4 years?
are the classes that i take in my 1st two years only for business?

any other information would be helpful, thank you

It’s often recommended to have a “back up” major. The breath requirements you’re fulfilling to get into Haas allow you the opportunity to take major prerequisites for other majors should you be rejected from Haas. Thus, you can still pursue a different major and graduate within 4 years (if you do it right and plan ahead).

You’ll be taking UGBA 10, which is required only for Haas. But your other breadth classes may double to fulfill L&S breadth course, major prerequisites, etc. dependent on the course.

Please visit http://haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/</a> as well as the L&S wesbite (Home | Letters & Science)

You’ll find more thorough answers there and it may answer any other questions.

just out of curiosity, do you know what major most students pursue if they get rejected from Hass?

Economics is a the popular fall-back major, however, you also must apply to the economics major. There is then again another chance that you may not be accepted into the economic program.

So, there is also the fall back option of political science.

I’m not sure how many people use Political Economy of Industrial Societies (PEIS) as a back-up.

Usually, if you get rejected from HAAS, you major in Economics-- if business is still the route you’re trying to go. (Not that economics is easier or anything, it’s just the closest thing you’re going to get to business).

Also, the class requirements for HAAS aren’t solely all things realted to business-- there’s some English, math, etc. And those breadth classes, too. So don’t be too worried about not finding a major.

UGB 10 is also a prereq for one of the newest majors, Operations Research and Management Science.

Which, incidentally, is also impacted.

http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/choosingmajor/declare.html#caps</a></p>

I love Berkeley. Its so full of options …

"Which, incidentally, is also impacted.

<a href="http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/choos...clare.html#caps">http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/choos...clare.html#caps</a>"</p>

Wow. It wasn’t impacted the last time I checked (last semester)!

Berkeley is full of options. Some of them, however, are harder to access, such as engineering, computer science, business, but most are quite accessible.

Yes, all the useful (high income) ones are harder to access …

Well, I suppose it could be worse. For example, none of the other UC’s even offer a business undergraduate minor (although I believe some offer a business minor). All other things being equal, it’s better to have the possibility of getting into a certain major you want than not to have the possibility at all.

According to the latest acceptance letter to Haas, over 1700 applications for for only 350 spots.

The competition is not as bad as that statistic may make it sound. The 1700 number includes transfer applications, half of which are not even eligible as they have not completed the necessary prerequisites or the 7/9 breadth requirements. Last year, 447 applied from Berkeley, and 1176 applied for transfer. 263 Berkeley applicants were accepted, and 90 transfer applicants were accepted.

is there anything to do besides economics incase you are rejected, i understand economics is the most popular alternative major but i really am not interested in that. what other majors would be open to Haas rejects?

Political science, Political economy of industrial societies as eiffel has suggested. It’s up to you!

Why do people go to Haas for undergrad when most business schools prefer people to NOT major in business? Are most Haas undergrads not planning to go to grad school or something?

You are correct, many just want to go straight into a business job and make big bucks.

Correct. Haas students make a lot of money, according to the career center statistics (comparable to engineers).

While I can’t prove this, I think the rate of Haas undergrads eventually getting their MBA’s is far higher than the average rate.
