<p>Honda Civics are the new cool. Hard to find them on dealer lots or for sale used. I have a friend that bought a Toyota Corolla. He checked the paper every day and called sellers early in the morning and finally bagged one. His previous car was a Ford Expedition.</p>
<p>That’s because people cannot afford better.</p>
<p>I know a lot of people that can afford bigger/better/more expensive vehicles but they have chosen a more efficient lifestyle.</p>

<p>Nah, I had my new Porsche Turbo in the late 80’s boom. Sold it to buy a house. But I will always lust after a Porsche GT 3. Only newer Porsche I would really want. But won’t have in this lifetime. Have to save for retirement now. I have managed to keep all three of my early 911 S models (69, 70, and 73) and they have done nothing but appreciate–much better than stocks or homes. Paid an average of around $10,000 each and they are worth upwards of $50,000 each today. And I can drive and enjoy them in the meantime. The perfect investment. I have always been a sports car racing and Porsche enthusiast well before Wall Street became a big deal. I started going to races in the late 60’s at Road America and saw the earthy-shaking 1500 HP Porsche 917/30s set records that lasted for years. It brings a tear to my thinking how awesome those cars sounded and looked. So no, it had nothing to do with Wall Street jerks buying them. </p>
<p>The film “Le Mans” was just on TV this weekend featuring a similar model and Steve McQueen. Best racing movie ever. In the beginning he drives up in his early 911S. His family still owns the car.</p>

Wow, “Le Mans”! That made me smile as it was my aunt’s favourite film (she passed away last year).</p>
<p>Do you detail the cars yourself or have them done professionally?</p>
<p>Actually I’m not that big (or anal enough) on keeping them superclean. Wash them twice a year whether they need it or not.
I see water as the enemy for old cars without much rustproofing so I try to keep them as dry as possible, always. Not easy in a wet climate. I worry more about keeping the mechanicals in top form and blowing out the carbon every so often if you know what I mean AKA Italian tune-up.</p>
<p>BTW Bill Gates is a big Porsche fan and got arrested back in the day for speeding in his 911–there’s a mugshot out there somewhere. He spent years trying to get a 959 Porsche into the US.</p>

Come on man, those 996 Turbos are sub-50K now. You know you want one. Just picked up an NSX myself (seriously awesome car, if you’ve never driven one).</p>
<p>If I bought another Turbo it would be a 1989 with the old classic body style. Those are around $35K and greatly underpriced for what you get. More classic potential than the newer ones. Or a clean 1979 for around $25K. Most have been modified so a good original one is hard to find. </p>
<p>We used to get the occasional NSX at our track days. Definitely underappreciated and a good investment.</p>
<p>I’m hoping to get a car from this millenium before the current decade is over (in other words to get at least a 2000 or newer car before 2010, probably a Toyota Corrolla). But until the Honda dies and it isn’t worth it to fix, I will continue to drive it a few days a week. I may have something called disposable income after my son graduates college in 2011. I never had that before.</p>
<p>We are doing the same. However, since things will change a lot after Nov. 4, we cut ALL spending and buying only groceries, gas and other necessities. We did not buy a car that we were planning to buy (even found one) a month ago. No economy boost from us.</p>
