the chances of me ever buying a car that cost more than my house did is not very high. Last time I checked, that porsche would take the same amount of time to drive to my office as my 1991 Honda Civic.

sueinphilly, that is so true! Next time I see a guy in a shiny Porshe sitting in traffic while my bus is whizzing by in the carpool lane, I’ll wave to you, barrons! That is a very nice set of wheels. If you do have the moolah and want the car, go for it!

and let’s not even talk about the insurance. Probably more than my mortgage payment. Benefit of driving a nearly 18 yo car is that I have no comprehensive or collision and pay $400 a year (I live in a high rate area no matter who you are). I drive less than 1500 miles a YEAR. Every year when it gets inspected, I tell my mechanic how much I appreciate him keeping my car running. And I walk out with a free calendar!

I’m more into the old Porsches circa 1969-1973 when they were lighter and purer sports cars. And hardly anyone got the automatic (sportomatic then). And we get to drive ours in the carpool lanes too–when it’s not raining of course.

And Sue, until you have made the drive to your office in a Porsche you have no basis of comparison. And you might even get there a little faster and with a big smile on your face. You might even be tempted to take the long way around.

I looked at an A8 several years ago. It was $60K back then. The thing that I have with Euro cars after having driven them for too many years is that maintenance and reliability was truly awful. I’ve read that the rear-engine 911s can be a little tricky to drive in the Northeast. I think that most garage them for the winter up here.

It’s a sin to drive a Porsche on roads that are salted. Or any car meant to be cherished as more than just transportation. That even includes those Italian jobs.

DH is dreaming of Vespas.

I know it is not quite the same, but I fell in love with the Cayenne the first time I saw it. I even thought about owning one… for a day or two. :o

If I have spare money I guess I will settle for a extra home or two.

I keep threatening to buy another Ducati. But a Vespa would be cool to. I just look silly on one.

I parked right next to a Porsche today and had the same thought. I should have been less conservative with my money, I should have spent money buying a Porsche. At least, I would feel better than looking at my mutual fund account.

^^DH sold some stock during the beginning of burst of the tech bubble, and we bought a truck with that money. The truck was a better long-term investment than the stock (the company is still around but it is trading for pennies nowadays). Sigh.

I think I will look totally cool on a Vespa, in my high heels and with my long silk scarf
. When it does not rain around here, i.e. may be two days in August.

I saw a lady on a Vespa style scooter on her way to work this morning. She had on heels. The scooter was pink, as was her helmet. I felt rather boring.
Of course today was nice and cool so she probably didn’t arrive at work with her hair plastered to her head with sweat like most days in Dallas…

barrons - My ancient neck and wrists won’t let me to ride sport model Ducati’s anymore. But buy me a Monster S2R and I’ll share it with you on Wednesdays!

PS, Get it in red, please.

IF I had extra money … I’d buy a very nice Cadillac. After seeing the pictures from my 30th high school reunion this past weekend (I declined to attend, but enjoyed seeing the pictures), I guess I have to get used to the fact that I am now middle aged. At least, everyone sure looked that way, and I am their age. If we have to be old and wrinkly, we should at least be able to be old and wrinkly in a Cadillac! :)

Come on Barron’s, you’re not seriously lusting after this Wall Streetesque lifestyle car.

I am doing well and I bought a car. And I go out to clubs like every week. And I go out to eat like every day.

^Location: SoCal.

no kidding
;)

Life is tough.

Yeah, but you’d look a bit ridiculous riding around in a '91 Civic. Ouch.
