If you type your essay/short answers,

Do you staple the printed paper to the original application? Or just put it in the envelope with everything else?

No reason to staple. They’ll just have to rip out the staple to scan.

Can you scan and use a PDF form maker to type directly into form?

Trick we learned from high school advisors in the college application process was to buy large transparent labels – you can get 8.5" x 11" sheets at Staples/office supply. Print the essay on the label and paste to the application.

What schools still insist on paper applications? Do them online and save yourself a lot of trouble and save the paper, stamps, and emissions generated by moving those envelopes from your house to the school.

Seriously, does anyone know of a school without online submission? Last year Andover didn’t have it, but I’m assuming that they do now.

From what I can see, Kent still does. There’s nothing on their website about online applications, but if anyone else can find it, feel free to post the link.
Strangely enough, I never thought of it that way. I will be applying online :)

I don’t recall Taft having an online application. After you inquire there is a link to a pdf that you can print out and send in.

Exeter requires you to handwrite your essays (along with a typed copy) that you have to mail in.

All of the other 7 schools I am applying to (Berkshire, Brooks, Choate, Hotchkiss, PA, SMS, and SPS) have online apps.

Nevermind, I found the Kent online app!
So all four schools I’m applying to have online applications.

By the way, if you electronically submit your applications, must your teachers also electronically submit their recs? Because my teachers are kind of technologically challenged…

While some portions of the application are submitted online, some sections cannot. Typically the essays are on paper. Additionally, some schools insist on the essay being handwritten with a typed backup. Just a few examples, Exeter and Deerfield require the personal essay in the applicant’s own handwriting.

bshopeful: the recs can be a mix. We did all of ours on paper.

sevendad: all the schools we applied to use PDF’s. There are many pdf editors on the market. It is worth the purchase, especially since some good ones are quite cheap (anything other than Adobe is cheap).

What if i print out the application with the answers. Like instead of typing it out and stapling it to the original application, can i just edit it on the computer, like for Name, put my name so when it prints out, the application has my name in ink.
