if you're a poor transgendered student...

Considering you can’t do better than the APA, I would say you are a hypocrite.

Reparative “therapy” has been denounced by nearly the entire psychological community. Err, do I say congrants for picking the few invalid groups that actually support something that’s been proven both ineffectual and harmful from years of research…? The point of “therapy” is to become more comfortable with your persona and self-perception, to make allowances so you can function effectively and (more) happily with yourself as you are, not to change it entirely, as you suggest. If you refuse to accept something that’s set in stone then go ahead, that’ll make one of us. The ignorant one.

Those are right-wing political groups, thoroughly research any of them and I can assure you they (or their proxy PACs and 527s) donate funds to the Republican Party and it’s respective “candidates”, if you can call them such….

It isn’t because…it isn’t.

You didn’t read that manual, did you? Didn’t even look at everyone who sponsered it, did you? This is who helped sponser it:

American Academy of Pediatrics,
American Counseling Association,
American Association of School Administrators,
American Federation of Teachers,
American Psychological Association,
American Psychiatric Association
American School Health Association,
The Interfaith Alliance,
National Association of School Psychologists,
National Association of Social Workers,
National Education Association

Little more than the APA, eh Bakayaro? ALL LEGITIMATE PSYCH ORGANIZATIONS AND HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORT OUR VIEWS.

http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2010/2/18/129109805288660745.jpg

The term “sexual brokenness”? You’re telling me a practice containing the word “brokenness” can be seen as effective and harmless? Etymology says otherwise!

^Yes, as I said lots of times, Psych organizations warn us that reparative therapy is useless at best, and the client commits suicide at worst.

Their Success Cases: 1) Either bisexual and just displayed a preference for one over the other; 2) Is repressing it, still gay but just forcing themselves to act, like all those right-wing politicos; 3) They’re lying/faking it/weren’t LGBT to begin with.

They also like to use the “File Drawer Effect” google it - totally invalid, by rote

Wait, but how can LGBTs fake being LGBT if being LGBT isn’t a choice? In that case, who is to say who is and who isn’t faking or choosing?

Wow, now you’re just being deliberately thick, aren’t you?

I would take the “faking it” option out of that statement (what kind of person would fake it to the point that they go through reparative therapy?). The “successful” cases of reparative theory are those who are bisexual with a preference for one gender; those who end up repressing it (leading to more self-hatred and deepening the depression); and those who were curious, but ultimately were heterosexual.

Sorry about the brief absence, girlfriend’s not quite a history scholar haha.

What I’d really like is for those of you casually reading this thread is to go back through it. Reread how someone asking for help turns into an argument about the validity of a person’s gender identity.

Realize that we live in a world where attacks like the one that just happened in Baltimore are common. That we hold a day of remembrance each year to commemorate the trans people who were murdered in the year prior, because frequently they get no attention, no recognition otherwise.

So next time you hear about some state trying to get rid of LGBT support centers on their college campuses, or next time you hear someone make a tranny joke, maybe you can remember the people it affects.

By that I mean they’re props by the NARTH people. Straight people who just said “Oh yeah, I’m gay, this worked on me” as a false case study. They’re fakes. But yeah, the other two are more likely.

@FullOfPop - yeah, it kinda annoys me that we can’t have an LGBT person come on here and ask for advice without ■■■■■■ trying to cause emotional suffering. I don’t like having to derail the thread myself while trying to shut their derail up.

@USC - Refer to the beginning of this post. They’d be faking it because they were right-wing shills who were being paid to claim they were gay and were then cured. Swap in “fraudulent.” And btw, you can “fake” a behavior without faking the actual sexuality. I pity the college that let someone like you in. Either you’re profoundly incapable of critical thinking, just ********ting “for the lulz” or you’re just really…really… I’m not gonna say the last part. Seriously, is this willful stupidity on your part or are you actually being honest right here?

etudiantconfus, I’m a trans college student and I’d love to talk with you… but I’d rather stay out of this thread. Feel free to send me a PM :)

Itach, is it possible for you to talk to anyone who holds an opinion opposed to yours without childishly insulting them or becoming angry? I haven’t called anyone a name or become angry, but you have been angry since this debate started.

^You can’t tell me you don’t know. You’ve been insulting LGBT people since you came to this thread after a mysterious month long disappearance - interestingly enough, right after Anti got roundly beaten. Seriously, calling us “disordered” telling us we need to be “cured” you can’t understand how you know… maybe that might annoy people?

Look, I’m polite to people who don’t post stupid *****. You’re espousing bigoted views, you have no right to expect me to reply kindly to that.

Another trans student here. You can order hormones for HRT online until a therapist prescribes you them which typically takes about three months. Some therapists you run into will be dead-ends and you’ll have to find a new one (you may find out only months later) so this is a good idea if you do not want any further masculinisation while you wait. Typical hormones used for male to female transsexuals are 17-beta-estradiol (a good brand for this is estrofem; taken sublingually) and spironolactone (swallowed), with typical doses being 2-4 mg estradiol and about 200 mg spironolactone. I don’t know if links are allowed or not, but inhousepharmacy.biz is where I’ve gotten mine for about a year and a half until I was able to get injections via my endocrinologist.

A good place to start searching for therapists is your own school as they are usually free. Other areas you will find trans-friendly therapists/psychiatrists are at Planned Parenthood, or clinics such as callen-lorde (highly recommended as the doctors & therapists are in the same building, & they actually talk to each other… hormones and blood work are very cheap here; they accept you if you’re uninsured and everything is done on a sliding-scale meaning the poorer you are, the cheaper everything is). You might have some other trans-friendly clinics nearby you, but I can’t really help you out anymore as far as therapy or prescribed hormones goes since I do not know where you are located.

Facial feminisation surgery may also be something to consider, but from the sound of it, you don’t need it. If you do though… Dr. Spiegel is my favorite.

Why are you getting surgeries then if you don’t need to be cured?

I’m not Anti, Itach. You are no better than the Republican Birthers making claims they didn’t have evidence for.
