IGETC certification

Right, if I sound like an idiot you’ll have to forgive me because I am even less than a “newbie” when it comes to forums and the like.

I took a chemistry class (Chem 151) in 2006 at College of the Canyons while I was still in high school and received a decent grade. It also fulfilled part of my IGETC requirement (Area 5A). The transcript stated “subject to credit limitation,” but once again at the time all the counselors stated that I need not worry about that as it is indeed transferable. However, I did not continue attending College of the Canyons and instead followed the IGETC of a different community college that I attended, which I have completed entirely except for that Area 5A that I completed in COC back in 2006.

All in all, I want to know if I can still use this class to fulfill the IGETC. The administration in my new college sucks. Sometimes I get counselors that tell me yes and others say no.

I don’t see why this should be a problem. Most counselors have told me that it is subject to credit limitation only if I take too many credits, which I obviously did not. It is still part of the IGETC at COC.

im pretty sure that u cant, u should really ask a counselor about that tho.

I don’t know what CalBearGuy is talking about…all you need to do is send your transcript from college of the canyons to your current college, and as long as that chemistry class satisfies area 5A you should be fine. When you submit your petition for IGETC certification just make sure you do it after they have your transcript and make sure you make a note of it. I would NOT recommend seeing any counselors at a community college because they all have no idea what they are doing.

@ jwalter: Your community college chem class that you took will satisfy your IGETC 5A requirement. I’m positive about this. Even though you switched schools, you should be fine. You could always verify this with the schools you’ve applied/are applying to.

@jwalter It will definitely count for your igetc dude. the whole system is set up to take classes from any community college. I’m actually in Chem 151 right now

Btw, I go to College of the Canyons!!! Too bad you didn’t keep going there, its pretty cool (for a CC… haha). You probably went to PCC or SMC huh
