Next semester I can either take Writing 2 which will be the last part of IGETC that I need or I can take one of the major prep classes. I’m currently missing 2 courses for my major. If i were to take the course I would be only missing one. Which is more important, taking Writing 2 to satisfy IGETC or the major course.

UC minumum eligibility requirements (2 English, 1 Math, and 4 “other” courses - a.k.aa the 7-course pattern)

The minimum requirement to apply for UC is two transferable college courses in English composition (writing). Do you already have 2 transferable English Writing courses completed? If not, and Writing 2 is considered to be your 2nd of the 2, then I highly recommend taking the Writing 2 course over the major prep course. It’s advised to take your required (read: minimum eligibility required courses, not necessarily IGETC required) English and Math courses as early as possible and then start to focus on major courses and IGETC.

Since it depends on each campus, then I would email each one you are applying to and get some confirmation in writing to make sure you are cleared of the requirement. Hope that helps.

Check to see whether the biomedical engineering major at your target UCs accepts IGETC to fulfill breadth requirements. If it does not, then you need to consider that the target UCs’ breadth requirements are and see if you can fulfill as many of them as possible before transfer. But major prep courses should be prioritized.

The UC campuses will grant credit for only one AP score and you absolutely must take one college level English course to be eligible even if you received 5’s on both. If you haven’t taken any composition courses at the CC yet you better take one in the spring.

You need to check each campus and major individually on [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) or the campus web site, rather than rely on generalizations that are likely incorrect in some cases.

For example, with Berkeley, math majors are in the College of Letters and Science, which accepts IGETC. Students without IGETC can use a 5 on AP English literature to fulfill two semesters of reading and composition courses, or a 4 on AP English (either) to fulfill the first of the two semesters of reading and composition courses.

But the Berkeley College of Engineering does not accept IGETC for its breadth requirements, and only allows the first of the two semesters of reading and composition courses to be fulfilled with AP credit (4 on either English).
