Ignorance about College

I’m a high school junior from a family whose parents are only high school grads. They have no knowledge whatsoever about college, graduate school, etc., neither do I. So what happens after you go to college? Do your grades matter? ECs? Work experience? What tests do you need to take? GED?

Basically, I’d like to know if everything is culmulative. Yeah, I’m so lost about “what’s after college.”

“So what happens after you go to college?”

You can either go to a graduate/professional school, or you can go get a job. For either of those two options, grades will matter, although after a few years, nobody will care what college you went to or what your grades were, as long as you have shown through your work experience your competence. Alternatively, you can choose to be an unemployed drain on society.

A GED is only for those who have failed to get a high school diploma.

Maybe you meant GRE? for grad school. But what matters most is work experience, an advanced degree, and your personality

i was in the same situation as you, except my parents never even made it to high school (it’s really a shame too, because from what i can tell, my dad is a brilliant man). then, i met some friends at a job and they knew everything there was to know about college. they were older than me, and now some of them are at top notch schools like stanford, hyp, swarthmore, davidson and other schools like that. i learned a lot from them. so sorry for going off topic a bit. basically, what happens after college is determined by what you wanna be when you leave. do you want to be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, architect? it really depends. ask as many questions as you’d like to be answered.

It depends greatly on your degree. What are you looking at right now?

First worry about getting into college. Then go to your college’s Career Center and they can help guide you about what you want to happen once you get out.
