IKEA Delivery--Reliable in Baltimore?

Hello CC Parents!
I’m a student transitioning from undergrad to grad school, and moving from Worcester, MA to Baltimore with my boyfriend. We have both lived in campus housing for our undergrad but our schools don’t provide grad housing so we are moving into a lovely, recently redone grown-up apartment in Mount Vernon in a few weeks! Obviously as young people we are planning on furnishing it with IKEA furniture. The place where we are moving has strict rules about move-in dates and such, and everything has to be moved in in one day. We have a “staging area” (my boyfriend’s family home) in New Jersey, about 2-1/2 hours from Baltimore, and we will have a UHaul van’s worth of stuff to move into the apartment that morning. I feel like a trip to IKEA to buy all the furniture after that will be exhausting and I’d much rather get it delivered. However, I’ve seen from reviews that IKEA delivery isn’t super reliable. Anyone have experiences to share?
Thank you!

It’s outsourced so unlike around the world where it’s complementary in the US you pay lots of $$$… just order from wayfair so much better

I’ve only ordered delivery from IKEA one time — for a particular piece of furniture I did not want to drive 1.5 hours (one way!) for and schlepp myself.

I did not get to choose the delivery date, and unbeknownst to me, the delivery required a signature.

…I wasn’t home. I had expected they would leave it on the front porch like everyone else does.

They gave me one more chance, and I was sure to be home for the delivery that time.

D just did ikea delivery and it worked very well. She’s on the third floor and they climbed it.

Mount Vernon is a charming neighborhood! My advice would be to get this load of things moved in, then think through what else you really do need. Happykid found everything she needed at local thrift stores. Right now, what is it you think you would get from IKEA? It could end up making best sense simply to rent a van for a day, and run out to IKEA yourselves.

We had IKEA deliver to our Baltimore house and had no issues.

FWIW, I don’t think it’s reasonable to not be able to have a shipment on another day.

My daughter just used local delivery from Ikea to her DC apartment and they had no issues. They went to the store and realized what they wanted wouldn’t fit in their car. It may have even been delivered the same day. I’d call the store you’ll be shopping at and ask about delivery options.

PS…Ikea does not generally deliver on the same day so you’ll need to plan in advance.

Thanks so much for all your responses! I called the Baltimore IKEA and they said ordering 7-10 business days ahead should get us the best choice of delivery dates. But we may do click-and-collect instead so we can do it exactly when we need to since we will have a van for our stuff for the day anyway.
