Ill Students Keep Health Coverage

Did anyone read this article in today’s New York Times?

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/10/09/us/AP-US-Michelles-Law.html?_r=1&scp=9&sq=parent’s%20health%20insurance%20policy&st=cse

The gist of the article is that a new federal law that took effect on Friday allows college students to take up to a year off school for medical reasons and remain on their family’s health insurance plan. It seems to me that this is a pretty huge deal.

This is great news.

I just read the article about “Michelle’s Law”. Who even knew that a seriously ill student faced the choice between remaining a fulltime student and losing health insurance? I did not. I don’t think insurance companies should be allowed to cancel someone after they become sick. That is the whole purpose of insurance, isn’t it?

Great news!

Wow. This really explains something. My friend’s d had a roomate last year that has bone cancer. She was very ill, and while I admired her desire to try to have a normal life, it seemed to me that the rigors and demands of college along with the general germ population in a dorm could be very detrimental to her health. I wondered why her parents would be willing to let her go, but I bet this is exactly why she was there.
