Essay #1:

How have your past circumstances and experiences (such as your upbringing, community, and/or activities) impacted who you are, your future goals, and your choice of major? If you haven’t decided on a college or major yet, briefly explain your intentions and aspirations for your first year at Illinois. Please limit your response to approximately 300 words.
Monsoon season was just about two months away. I wiped my forehead, both because of the humidity and because of the task ahead of me. I looked at the group of about fifty children in front of me, all busy chattering to themselves in their own dialects and thought to myself ‘Alright, how am I going to do this?’. After letting them talk for some more, I tried to get their attention. I introduced myself to them in both Hindi and Bengali and then told them that I was going to teach them the English alphabet. As soon as they heard that, there was pin-drop silence in the room. I asked them to repeat each alphabet after me. I had to repeat each letter number of times, but once they got it, they even tried formulating sentences! I was surprised at their aptitude and keenness for learning. It was an honor to teach these kids, and I thought about the wonders they could do had they had better resources. While we complain about not having smartphones, a toy cell phone brings gaiety to these kids. After we were done for today, all the kids gathered around me and hugged me. After our exchange of greetings, I went outside and saw an inauguration of a residential complex for the poor. The engineers in charge were looking so proud of their achievement and the slum residents looked up to them as if they were their messiah. It is then that I realized why not make a living out of helping people out and bringing more smiles to their faces? Why not do something that can improve these kids’ future?

In no more than 300 words, tell us something about yourself that isn’t covered elsewhere in this application, some interest or experience of yours that you think the University of Illinois should know about as part of the admissions review.
Buzz buzz. The droning whine of the mosquito seemed to be interminable as it maneuvered through the air in front of my nose and ear. Buzzzzzzz. I cursed under my breath and even though my hands were itching to end its frolic, I thought to myself ‘He is not doing any harm to you, let it be.’ I try to empathize and look at it from the insect’s perspective. What if I were to be quashed between the unforgiving palms of a person? I think this philosophy of mine can be applicable to animals as well. Around the world, exotic animals are on the verge of extinction due to a common human trait: greed. Harmless animals such as the tiger and rhino are lured into traps and mercilessly killed for their gaudy skins and teeth sold at exorbitant prices. Little do these scoundrels know the adverse effects of their actions. The decline in predators disrupts the balance of the ecosystem, as the herbivores eat away the vegetation, therefore depleting the greens that we humans rely so much on. I have tried to contribute to ending these hideous activities by donating money to the WWE and going on runs that help raise money to conserve wildlife. I know that my efforts will not be enough, but I do know that it only takes a spark to get a fire going. Hopefully, I can extend this support through college and raise awareness about how animals’ lives are intertwined with ours.
