<p>Hey, this is my first semester in ILR, and I literally got an “F” in one of my Computer Sciences courses…I did great on the final, but since I did no homework, the final exam didn’t really do much to boost my grade.</p>
<p>Now, I know ILR has academic policies regarding "F"s. I don’t know my other grade yet in my other science course, but I’m assuming it might not be high enough.</p>
<p>What are the chances of new students being suspended for a semester or two for getting "F"s?</p>
<p>Yes, some circumstances did take place this semester (actually, LOTS of them) and I do have excuses for not keeping up with my course load; but I do not know how flexible the committee is when looking at Appeals.</p>
<p>What do you mean by “suspended”? You might be asked to take an academic leave of absence, with conditions applied to your return (what exactly the restrictions are, I’m not sure). Rest easy, though- no one is EVER kicked out for having one bad semester. I’m almost positive this applies to all colleges. (Two, however, is a different story.) I have a friend who got an F last semester (along with 2 Cs) and was asked to take a leave. What happens to you probably will depend at least partly on the other grades you got. Were your other grades bad too (Cs and Ds) or relatively good?</p>
<p>In any case, whoever you meet with isn’t going to be mad at you- just sympathetic and concerned and wanting to act in your best interests. As to how flexible the committee/person who handles this will be- again, this is just ONE bad semester, not two (which makes a huge difference) and I think they’ll be flexible.</p>
<p>If you got an F, that means you are not in good academic standing. When grades become official (Jan 2, I think?) you will probably get a letter from your college and will meet with someone to discuss this. Don’t be intimidated, though. It’s understood that studens will have bad semesters for whatever reason. Especially freshmen. College is a hard adjustment!</p>
<p>No matter what the person you meet with (probably your advising dean) says, I’d consider taking a semester off if you’re feeling burnt out and unmotivated to do the work. I’m taking a non-academic leave this semester just for the hell of it. It’s not a bad thing- actually, I think it’s a very good thing (but I’m biased, of course).</p>
<p>so your friend who got an “F” really did get the “Required Leave of Absence”? Wow. Well, had to drop 1 class with a “Withdrawal”, I received an “A” in another one and a “C-” in the last one. So all in all, not looking so good.</p>
<p>So is the “Required Leave of Absence” really required? I don’t see how I would need to take a semester off to feel “motivated.” I think my “F” this semester is motivational enough haha. Can they really force me to take a semester off, even when I firmly believe I can get a 4.0 in Spring?</p>
<p>But she is in A&S. The case might be totally different in ILR, not sure.</p>
<p>I’d say that taking a leave WOULD be useless if you were working hard but not getting results. But as you said, you got the F cuz you didn’t do the homework. I dunno, I may be wrong, but it seems that if you just don’t care about work, it’s hard to just magically make yourself care, even with the added motivation from an F. It’s just been my experience that apathy about schoolwork is a hard feeling to shake (part of why <em>I’m</em> taking a leave haha).</p>
<p>I don’t know if they force you to take a semester off just for one bad semester, but they might strongly encourage you to do it. Again, I dunno how this is handled in ILR. I think the general policies re: academic standng and required leaves are laid out in the red courses of study book. Try checking that out.</p>
<p>I had a friend who was placed on academic leave for one semester (not ILR though) for basically failing all of his classes. His parents were not thrilled about it to say the least. I don’t know if there is any kind of appeal process where you could maybe explain your case though.</p>

<p>Wait, those are the conditions under which you’ll be kicked out?
It seems extremely harsh to kick someone out for just 2 Fs in one semester.
In any case, though, it looks like you’re good. Be careful about the crazy hard/high level CS classes, though!</p>
<p>lianri: Yeah, those are the terms of Required Leave. Well, I guess 2Fs isn’t harsh since ILR courses aren’t really that tough at all…as long as you go to class and do the homework haha. There is still the risk that I got an “F” in another science course I took this semester. I don’t know yet, but in any case, I’m going to email the professor very soon.</p>
<p>tun: So it was also your friend’s first semester here? Well, despite a bunch of family situations, I did start my own business back in August (I have the 100+ emails to show it) that took up literally all my time. Of course I’ll drop that business this Spring.</p>

<p>But you said your friend was just asked to take a leave (understood that he/she would come back to Cornell later). I thought the conditions wave just posted were for actually kicking someone out of the college permanently. Is that what you meant by “out,” wave? It seems more like those conditions are just for taking leaves</p>
<p>Sorry if I didn’t clarify. When I said “out” I actually meant “temporary leave.” But either way, I probably won’t have a place to stay if they forced me out for a semester (my parents probably won’t even talk to me haha)</p>

<p>Academic Standing
Good standing requires that all of the following criteria be met at the end of each semester:</p>
<ol>
<li> an average of C- (1.7) for the semester’s work, including a minimum of 8 completed and letter-graded credits; </li>
<li> no failing grades in any course, including physical education; </li>
<li> a cumulative average of C- (1.7) for all completed semesters. </li>
</ol>
<p>If at the end of any semester a student fails to maintain good standing, or if overall academic performance is so marginal as to endanger the possibility of meeting school and university degree requirements, his or her record is reviewed by the Committee on Academic Standards and Scholarships. The committee may issue a written warning to the student at that time. If a student who does not improve after the written warning, he or she may be placed on a required leave of absence for one or two semesters.</p>
<p>Sounds like you’ll only be given a warning and won’t be asked to take a leave. w00t. just make sure you improve next semester…</p>
<p>So that means I have to get a warning first, even though I already meet the requirements for a Required Leave of Absence? Because when I skipped down and read the “Required Leave of Absence” section, it said “Fail more than 2 classes.”</p>
<p>I guess we can’t “skip” all the way to Required Leave, without a “Warning” first? Was that the case with your other friends too?</p>

<p>Hey, I just got the grade on my last class…it’s only 1 F in Comp Sci! Everything else is actually great…I thought I had gotten an “F” in ILR Stat as well, but I apparently did great on the final, so that boosted me up to a B+.</p>

<p>Yes, my friend basically failed his first semester of freshman year, and they made him go home for the second semester of freshman year. (this was last year btw)</p>
<p>I went to one of my classes maybe 5 times, the final grade was 1/3 prelim 1, 1/3 prelim 2 and 1/3 final, and I only studied the day before for each, I got a D.</p>
