ILR Building

Alright, so I have seen a map and pictures of Cornell, but I am having a tough time actually understanding where the ILR (Ives?) building is… It does not appear to be in any of the publications or on the website really. Is it near the Arts Quad? Is it really ugly and in some weird part of campus? Whats the deal.

it’s right in the middle of campus. Next to uris hall and the hotel school

My only complaint about Ives Hall is the lack of ventilation in the bathrooms. After someone takes a big one (which happens every day in Ives Hall as you will come to realize), the smell just lingers in there for hours.

Scroll down to “central buildings” and you will read a description of the location relative to other parts of the campus - there is also a little photo.

if you are in ILR you ever get to take classes in Goldwin Smith?

Goldwin Smith is a definite possibility. I have a class in one of GS’s three auditoriums this semester. I’m taking GOVT 161: Intro to Political Philosophy, a popular course among ILRies since it fulfills the Western Intellectual Tradition distribution requirement.

In ILR, plenty of your credits will come from outside the School since it’s so small, so it’s definitely possible to have classes in the Arts Quad and beyond. My writing seminar was in McGraw, which is officially tied with Ives for my favorite building on campus. I’ve also had classes in Kennedy (Ag Quad) and I have ILRie friends who end up in the Engineering Quad, so you aren’t at all restricted to Ives- you’ll probably just end up hanging out there for fun :)

Though Ives is pretty ugly architecturally, it’s new and clean, Catherwood Library is the best, and it’s never a long walk to meet with a professor, your advisor, somebody in Student Services or Career Services, or all of your friends. I love it.

Why do you want to take classes in Goldwin Smith?

I have no idea haha…where are the intro’s to micro and macro economics?

why does it matter? Do you feel less “Ivy League” if you aren’t in the arts quad or something?

While the exterior isn’t the most flattering, I find the interior to be really nice, clean, and new (at least when I was there during winter break). It’s location literally right next to the Statler was extremely convenient; I remember how shocked I was when we pulled up to the Statler driveway and could see the “Ives Hall” sign and building from the car!

My Intro Micro was in Kennedy, which is on the edge of the Ag Quad and close to Ives. Intro Macro is in the Statler Auditorium (Hotel School), and also right by Ives.
