ILR, FWS, and AP Credit

There seems to be conflicting information out there regarding whether or not ILR will place a student out of one of their first year writing seminars with a 4 on AP English Lit and Comp. From ILR’s [PDF on AP credit:

This seems to suggest that a score of 4 on the AP English Lit and Comp exam places one out of a FWS. Then, there’s the Knight Institute’s website](http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/admissions/Apply/upload/ap-exams-2.pdf):

Which information is consistent with ILR’s policy?

You get 3 credits regardless of whether you score a 4 or 5.

If you get a 5, you can apply those credits towards an FWS (i.e SKIP an FWS). You CANNOT do this if you get a 4.

If you get a 4, you get three credits but STILL have to do TWO writing seminars.

Clearer?

Well, that isn’t consistent with what is on the ILR website, so nothing’s “clearer” for me.

ILR’s policy is clear on both their AP credit PDF and the OSS website, so I’m assuming the Knight Center’s assertion that only CALS accepts a 4 to place out of a FWS is a typo. But, if someone with direct knowledge of how ILR handles AP credit (not another prefrosh) in this situation can confirm this, I’d feel more comfortable.

I graduate this past May. I scored a 5 in AP Literature. I placed out of one FWS class (out of two required).

jlw297@cornell.edu - Jennifer Weidner. She’s ILR’s sole registrar lady. She will conduct your AP credit fulfillment. Shoot an e-mail to her and provide your name, net ID, student ID, and DOB. You’ll need to talk to her sooner or later anyway so get this out of the way and save yourself the headache of being mistakenly enrolled in a FWS course come Fall.

Best of luck.

And I graduated from ILR.
