this is probably the most stupid post I’ve ever come across here

what do you think the word “Hispanic” mean exactly? illegal Mexicans??

The word “Hispanic,” used to mean a person from “Hispania,” which is the name Ancient Romans gave to the Iberian Peninsula, BOTH Portugal and Spain.

The word have been missed used by most Americans, and has taken a different political connotation in this country. Fist was used to identify a lot of different cultures as one single culture (thus you here people in the State talking about the Hispanic Culture or Hispanic race, when in reality there is not such thing, since every Hispanic countries are a mix of different cultures and race). The term then was exclusively used to refferd to Latin Americans, mainly due to most American’s ignorance about the orignis of the term.

In short, anybody who a country who speak Spanish is a Hispanic, and guess what The Spanish Language came from Spain, so they are more Hispanic than anybody else.

Second of all, the modern definition of the word “Latin,” Outside of The United States that is, is any person who speak a language that comes from the Latin word. Therefore, people from Italy, Haiti, Brazil, Portugal, Romania, Moldova, France, and several Islands in the Caribbean are all Latin. As well as the French Speaking regions in Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, Africa and the Middle East (e.g. French Lebanese, French Moroccans, French Egyptians, French Algerian and Guinea Equatorials).

Also saying that Italians are not Latin is a reverent stupidity since there is where Latin comes from to begin with.

And the word Latino, as opposed to Latin, is just the Spanish translation of the word Latin, so NO there is no real difference between the 2 words. At least Latin Americans and other Latin people do not make such a distinction, The word Latino is more of an American -made word taken from Spanish, out of content, that has been given political and racial meaning that it actually lacked of in principle, and does not holds the same meaning in the rest of the world that is does in The United State.

Trans’ reply was harsh. This is not a stupid thread. However, colleges are asking for the ethnicity you idenitify with. Since you referred to “exploiting” this piece of your heritage, it does not seem like you consider yourself Hispanic. The NHRP (National Hispanic Recognition Program) requires you to be a quarter Hispanic. Colleges do not base ethinicity on the NHRP, but that is something to keep in mind.
