I'm 48, am I too old to pursue a career as a Geologist?

I’m 48 years and considering pursuing a career as a Geologist. I came back to school at age 46 and am getting an AS in Chemistry, I will graduate in May.

What I’m asking is:

Is it realistic that I can obtain employment as Geologist at age 51 when I graduate?

I just don’t see myself stuck in a lab day in and day out, I’m outdoor type person and an avid backpacker; I thru-hiked the Colorado Trail last summer.

I’ve always been interested in Geology and It would be nice to go to school for it. But it would be nice to have an idea if realistically would have a chance at employment when I graduate.

You have the same chance as a 25 year old just graduating. The only weird thing would be your lack of job experience. I’d tell you to go try to find an internship or maybe do some community server / part time job at anything relating to geology to show your love/understanding for it.

Im sure youll get a job.

Go for it, OP.

Go for it, go the distance with what you feel would be the best educational choice for you. Age is nothing but a number, man.

To be on the safe side, you might want to look into earning a teaching qualification while studying for your BS.

As long as you still have breath in your body, you’re not too old.
If it’s something you want to pursue and you have the means to, then do it. You only get one life, might as well reach for what you want.

Try and get as much experience as you can while in school, internships, research, etc. so that when you graduate, you won’t have a blank resume in that field.

Thank you folks for the good advice
