I'm a current HS Senior (college co 2029)... Is the Greek Life right for me?

Here are the two top schools I am considering so far, UF and TAMU. I will definitely go to one of these schools.

I recently watched 22 Jump Street and the way they portrayed Greek Life just seems unappealing. I know it’s a comedy movie, but Greek life in general just never looked good for me, I think that’s partially due to the warped lens media shows it through. But, I know a lot of people do go for the Greek life and talk about how good it is, so maybe there’s something I’m missing?

Could someone just explain what Greek life is for these two schools?

I consider myself extroverted and good at making friends, but I don’t really want to be in an all-white fraternity (I am Asian) where all they do is drink and eat pig feces (22 Jump Street). However, I would love to form a sense of brotherhood and become part of a successful friend group.

You are right. What you see in the movies is very different from real life. And every school and chapter is different. If you have already decided on these schools, Greek life doesn’t seem to be part of your decision in where you’ll go as much as if you will partake.
There is nothing wrong with waiting a semester or year to see if it appeals to you. You can also attend rush events to figure out if it is something you’d want to devote a large chunk of time to.

Okay, that makes sense. I just was worried that I would go into the school and miss out on lots of fun stuff that isn’t just drinking because of my stereotype. I was wondering if the stereotypes were true. Thank you! Do you know anybody with experience with Greek Life at TAMU or UF?

No. You can look up houses and then find them on Insta or look and see if they have a chapter website. Usually, they will post rush events (like BBQ’s, cornhole tournaments, etc) somewhere on social media.

Just from experience from other schools that I"m familiar with…
If you don’t want that stereotype, look at the smaller houses that fly under the radar. Don’t go for some kind of ranking, rather look at smaller houses where the brothers really know each other and like to hang out together.

Good idea! Thank you!
