im a junior

Hey guys any help would be fine
i know i shouldn’t be worrying too much right now but the earlier the better…i guess
Anyway here is a preview/stats of me

Hunter College High School- best private HS in nation or something- all classes are honors and we dont have a rank system or gpa
my grades are A/A- average
SAT - 2230 Math 800/ Verbal 630 / Writing 800- probably gonna retake
SAT II- Math 1C- 800/ Bio M 800/ Chem 710- going to retake chem and take 2c later and physics also
EC’s seem fine- wrestling team captain, hospital volunteer, band, school magazine editor-in-chief, big sib, intern at senator chuck schumer’s office

it would be greatly appreciated if someoen could give me advice on what i should be doing as of now. i plan to go to medical school after HS

Honestly, if I were you…I’d say you were done with those wretched SATs. If you want, you can still try to bring that verbal score up (but if you don’t plan on majoring in humanities or anything verbal-esque…if you know what I mean, it shouldn’t make too much of a difference). Don’t waste your time and money retaking Chem.

I think too many students place WAY too much emphasis on these SATs. If you have read about Hopkins’s admissions, the readers don’t even place the most weight on those things. DECENT SCORES (and not stellar ones) are just what you need to get your foot in the door and that’s as far as they will take you. You already have perfect scores on 2 tests, and 2 parts of the SAT I. What more could you ask for? So yeah. Just a reality check.

So let’s assume you take my advice and just chill with standardized testing. This is the perfect opportunity to vamp up your resume with interesting extracurricular activities that appeal to you and the person reading your app (like that internship at the Senator’s office!), which will ultimately give you that one last shove you need to get in.

thanks soymilk.
Are there any other schools that have a good med program?
I plan to apply for ED if i can find a match

Ok… I may be wrong but I believe you are a bit confused about how the whole medical school thing works. You cannot go directly to medical school after HS. You must first complete pre-reqs in an undergraduate program which you can find at www.aamc.org. After completing those with volunteer, research, MCAT, and other things you can then apply to medical school.

Johns Hopkins University I would say is most known in the medical field, and for that reason alone I would say its pre-med courses, advising, and opportunities are top-notch. Even Harvard has a hard time beating JHU in these areas.

But, then again maybe I’m just biased… b/c I absolutely love JHU…

i think what he means by med program is “sends a lot of students to good medical schools.” and the answer to that would have to be…ivy-leagues. sad, but true. and other top cc universities (preferably not public ones since they can get pretty tough).

check out the pre-med forum.

well he said “I plan to go to medical school after HS”

Spiked… I think you might be underestimating how much an undergraduate degree in Biology from JHU can do for you in medical school admissions…

My rather unscientific way of seeing feeder schools to top med schools is using www.mdapplicants.com and putting “harvard medical school acceptance” and it lists all students accepted who have profiles, and what schools they came from… JHU and Harvard undergrads are tied I think on there… I think Stanford is right behind them…

eh? the biology thing is kinda random. haha.

I’m not underestimating the biology Hopkins degree. But I’m just discouraging those who want to major in biology just because they are “premed” when they could possibly be a lot happier studying something else.

And in the spirit of JHU pride… Any degree from Hopkins is pretty d a m n good.

I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer Spiked. I was responding to what you said about who sends alot of students to good medical schools, which you said the ivy-leagues do. Although JHU is ivy-league calibur, it’s not ivy-league, and I was just defending JHU because they send an awful lot of their undergrads to great medical schools.

Edit: But now that I read your post closer you said “and other top cc universities”… so that already includes JHU
