I'm A Sophomore, Past Courses, Future Courses, Rate My Transcript and Help Me Improve! CHANCE ME!

Hello I’m a sophomore from Virginia and here are some things about me:

  • Gender: Male
  • Race: Biracial (Black/White)
  • PSAT: 1030 (I know its not good, but I took it without studying)
  • GPA: Weighted: 3.83 / Unweighted: 3.78

The first semester just ended so I figured I’d post this and ask you guys to help me, I plan to take the SAT & ACT this summer after intensely studying throughout the spring and also take the PSAT again the Fall of my Junior year. I’ll list my extra curricular’s and my transcript. I don’t know if this will increase my chances into any college but I am somewhat the first generation to attend attempt to go to an university. The reason I’m not one hundred percent sure is because my mother went to a community college, obtained her associates degree, and is now a registered nurse. I also had surgery on my hip in the seventh grade and had to miss school (but still maintained straight A’s) and had to relearn how to walk. Also know you can’t take no AP or IB classes until Junior year and their VERY intense (they offer one in the summer, which I took) I however do take the only Honors course available to a sophomore. I will list below my; completed courses, courses currently enrolled in, extra curricular’s, clubs, and hopefully future courses! Dual Enrollment and IB are the same thing!

Courses Completed:

  • Spanish I
  • Computer Applications
  • Algebra I
  • Earth Science I Advanced
  • Principle of Business and Marketing

Extra Curricular’s:

  • Part Time Job (15 hours/week)

(Hopefully) Future Courses:

Theses are all of my stats, please ask as many questions and leave as many comments as possible. I plan on majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry and would like to go into the medical field and eventually become an orthopedic surgeon. These are the colleges I’d like to go to, please reply with your honest opinion and give me some pointers please:

  • University of Virginia
  • University of Vanderbilt
  • University of Northwestern
  • Duke University
  • Dartmouth College
  • Boston College
  • University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
  • University of Washington
  • Tulane University
  • Georgetown University
  • Villanova University
  • University of California - Los Angeles

PLEASE leave your honest opinion and help me get into one of those colleges listed above by reccomending different classes, clubs, etc!

Thank You

As an OOS applicant for UCLA, expect little to no financial aid (need-based or merit) so make sure before you apply that your parents can pay $60K+/year for you to attend.

Also if you to plan to apply to UCLA, you need one year of a visual/performing arts course to meet the requirements.

How are you planning to jump from no AP classes to 5 APs? That’s going to be really hard… I"m a current sophomore and took 1 AP freshman year and am currently taking 2 this year, and during junior year I am only taking 4. Please reconsider your choice; it would probably be best to take less APs but perform better in them than take more APs and do poorly in them; however this depends on the level of difficulty of APs in your school but overall APs are much harder than honors and regular courses and require a lot of time. I’ve heard APHUG is fine tho so u should be good with that. Psych is easy too.

@Gumbymom my parents are in the position to do it but I feel as if they’d want me to pay for my schooling or at least help and what would fall under that category? My school offers Drama, Theatre, Art, Band.

@needtosucceed27 yes I understand, but in my current school I can’t take AP’s freshman or sophomore year. I’ve talked to my guidance counselor about these classes and she approved me of them. Psychology, Human Geography are pretty easy A’s at my school, but the others I will have to work for. My school is very competitive and if you’re not taking atleast 3-5 AP’s you won’t be top 10% in the class. For the most part I feel like I can finish with good grades in these classes. Thanks for your response!

Hopefully you realize that you as a student can only take a total of $27K/4 years worth of loans. The rest would be on your parents so that is around $100K for UCLA. Just run the Net Price calculator on all schools of interest and show your parents.

Your schedule looks pretty booked plus the 15 hours/week job. Junior year grades are critical, so make sure you can handle all this!

@Gumbymom thanks for the pointers on the financial side and for the links!

@Mom2BoysCA hopefully I can take them!

Junior:

  • AP Probability and Statistics => replace with a foreign language
  • AP US History
  • AP Psychology => take that or AP HG
  • AP Human Geography
  • AP English 11
  • DE Analysis
  • Chemistry II Honors
  • Biology II Honors
    Senior:
  • AP Biology => AP bio and AP chem together are too time intensive, especially with the labs. Pick one. Or take AP bio junior year.
  • AP Chemistry
  • AP US Government
  • DE Calculus
  • DE English 12
  • Business & Mentorship (I will shadow a person in the medical field)
  • Physics I Honors
  • Study Hall (Period dedicated to doing homework)

I would take Spanish IV Honors, but I’ve never been good at language
