Sophomore year, I took AP world, and so did my twin. We both did pretty well. Except I missed a few assignments and got a high C as my final grade and she got a B. Although in my defense, I kept a B all year till that point.
We took the Ap exam and I got a one. I like to think it was because I did not finish my multiple choice (got up to question 45 out of 70 ) and I might have been inaccurate on one of my essays. My twin, however, got farther, almost finished with her multiple choice and says she also feels like she was inaccurate on one of her essays.
When it got time to when we finally got our scores back, I discovered I scored a one, and my sister failed to login to her account because she messed it up somehow.
At school, I went to go get a printout of my transcript and discover I have an A in ApWH and was boosted from top ten to top 8 percent of my class. Sis went to get hers and still obtained her B in APWH, and did not move from being top 11. Sis does not think much of it, and did not bother asking what her AP scores were.
Also later, a former APWH classmates tells our APUSH class that someone got a four. Everyone knows what they got and knows they did not pass with a four. The only one who doesn’t know is my sister, and nobody knows who got the four.
A few weeks later, I work up the nerve to go to my APWH teacher and ask about the scores.(today, actually.) I’m embarrassed about getting a one and pretend to be my sister as he and most of my classmates still cannot tell us apart. He says that I (and by that I mean my sis) passed with a 3 or a 4. So by this point I’m sure Sis is the mysterious 4. I raise the issue that someone has messed up the transcripts and I got an A and Sis’s grade did not change. He says he will check again as he is not sure and can’t remember.
Well, I want to go to Harvard. Can you imagine what that will look like if they find out I have a one on my transcript? I mean, I’m going to give my sister’s rightfully deserved A, but I can’t help but feel like I effed up. If she could pass the test with a 4, I KNOW I could have. Any idea what will happen? Is our transcripts even fixable now that it is a new school year? I fear of being put on probation for NHS. (Sis is not in NHS.)
Sorry for the long post.
You are going to get this fixed for your sister’s sake, aren’t you? She might want that 4 instead of the 1 that you think she might have gotten instead. You haven’t provided enough info to have people chance you for Harvard.
Yes of course I’m going to get it fixed for my sister as she deserves it. No debate there.
As for the absent info, I apologize. Here it is. Freshman year I only had one honors class but I got a 3.8 GPA and was in the top 11 percent of my class, with only two B’s, the rest A’s. Sophomore year, I finally got all honors classes except of course for my two electives, one which was 3-4 foreign language. I got 2 A’s, two B’s (one of which was two percent away from an A), and two C’s, one of them being APWH. I was in top 10 percent this time. I think my GPA was either a 3.4 or a 3.3. This year, I’m doing well so far, two B’s and the rest A’s. I also took sports, freshman year being softball and last year being Track. This year I am joining Track and Cross Country as I am good at running. I did a little community service with Rotc last year, and now that I am finally 16 this year, will be doing a lot more, with and without ROTC. As for clubs, I did math Club for all years including this one and did culinary club freshman year. I got accepted into NHS last year and plan on joining the Academic decathlon and Drama club this year.
I wanna learn how to play the violin and plan on paying it myself as I plan on getting a job. I also took the PSAT last year and beat 75th of all who took it. I’m also African American, as I heard it can affect my chances.
Have your GC correct this to match what each of you truly earned in the class and on the AP exam. Then see where you stand. But the B’s and C’s will likely be your problem, for Harvard. (Especially if your hs has you around the top ten % with those grades.) Unless you’re a potential history major, you could avoid sending the APWH score, if you haven’t. Then get an A and a 5 for your next AP history class.
Based on your stats, I’d say you have little to no chance at Harvard, unfortunately. You’ll be competing against students who have earned all As in every subject all four years–sometimes a student can get by with 1 C, but not multiple.
Telling you this isn’t to put you down, but to give you realistic expectations. You’ll need to find a list of schools that are more on target for your GPA and test scores (whatever they are when you take the SAT or ACT) and focus on those. There are a LOT of great schools beyond the scope of Harvard that you’d qualify for.
Yeah, I had a nagging feeling that I messed up my chances when I got those grades. However do you have ideas for universities that are great? I at least wanna get into I’ve League.
All the tippy tops can cherry pick among top performers.
The Ivy League uniformly has tippy-top standards–they’ll be the same as Harvard. These are schools that turn away 4.0s and 1600 SATs all the time; they are exceedingly challenging to get into. You’ll need to look far beyond elite schools to find your matches. Depending on your state, you should start with state schools as your match or safety; these are most likely to be affordable for you/you’re highly likely to gain admission (a 3.4 is a solid GPA, just not high enough for elite schools).
If what you like about Harvard is the size/campus/style, etc. then I would recommend looking at liberal arts colleges and/or other smaller, private colleges. Honestly LACs are not my expertise, but there are many on CC who will be able to make excellent suggestions based on your stats.
