I'm borderline - Chances?

My grades are really borderline, but I have many leadership positions, activities and diversity experience. The reason my unweighted is so low is because I took very hard english and social studies classes my frosh and sophomore year, and it only counted as honors my soph year and after. I’m planning on applying very early, either right before school starts or first/second week.

I’m wondering your opinion on whether or not I need to apply straight to the summer term because my grades are so borderline, or if I have a good enough chance to apply to fall term (early action).

(In-state)
3.52 unweighted
3.77 weighted (but I know U of M doesn’t even look at that)
ACT 25

Honors English and Social Studies 3 years, Honors Forensics 1 year, Honors French 1 year

Senior Class President of Class
Sophomore and Junior Vice-President of Class
Field Day Chair (Song Chair Soph year, General Chair junior year)
Forensics 3 years (1st place in District, 2nd place in Regionals, 6th Place in State for Dramatic Interpretation… 3rd, 4th and 5th place at invitational tournaments… all in junior year)
Musical all 4 years
Lacrosse all 4 years
Yearbook Student Life Editor junior year
Member of NHS (junior and senior year)
About 40 to 50 community service hours
Job- Work as Sales Assistant in a clothing store about 8-12 hours a week

Diversity - I’m fluent in Arabic and I’m half Chaldean
I’m writing the diversity essay about how I translated for an Arabic girl who transferred to my school in elementary school, and how hard it was for her and me because she wasn’t treated equally…

I don’t know if this helps but…
I also attend one of the top public high schools in Michigan. When U of M recalculates our GPA they add in extra points(a very small amount) to it because of the difficulty of our classes.
About 40 students in the class of 2008 are going to Michigan, and I think quite a few more than that were accepted.

Admission is a reach

So should I apply straight to summer term then?

i don’t understand this summer term thing
so you’re going to be a high school senior in the fall… where does this summer term come in…?

More so than your grades, I think your ACT is the issue. 25 is pretty low for Umich. In state even, I’d say you want AT LEAST a 27/28 to be competitive. Try retaking it or maybe the SAT?

Summer after Senior year. That means I take classes in the summer rather than fall. It’s basically just starting school early. They offer it to people they defer but I thought if I applied straight to it I would be guaranteed in. In the app you just choose to apply to summer term rather than fall.

so if you apply to summer term, then it means you have to go to school in the summer if you get accepted?

My brother did that in 1982. He was deferred and I suggested he apply for summer term start. It was a great idea. He got acclimated to the school when the campus was relatively quiet and eventually met his future wife in his sophomore year. It’s funny, but we never know what kind of fate we will be dealt with along the way. I’d say it was the best decision of his life.

so applying to summer term will have a better chance of getting in than applying to fall term? do i have to start school in the summer if i apply to summer term?

yeah you start school mid-summer i think. i know people who did it and didn’t mind it at all. you get to stay there and and take classes, get the credits out of the way.

I know somebody that got in with a 24 with a 3.7. Although he probably had a hook which got him in.

definitely a reach. you need to raise your ACT. if you would have had a 25 act and a higher GPA(3.9+), u would have had a chance. try to get a 30+ on your ACT. but if you can’t raise your ACT score, apply for the summer term. best of luck & GO BLUE!

This is a two year old thread. The OP did not get into Michigan. OP was accepted to Penn State and enrolled at Dennison.
