I'm bored in my major and have no motivation to keep going

Hello,
As the title says, I’m bored in my major (Economics). I’m taking two courses in my major, neither I’m finding to be particularly interesting. For reasons I won’t bore anyone with, I’m kinda stuck continuing with said major. Anyone have any ideas of how I can cope?

Actually, this will be very important for getting relevant advice. Please elaborate?

I was going to try to switch to a STEM major, but had a hard time in one of the major course (Chem). Since I didn’t pass this course it made little sense to keep pursing a stem field, even though that is my area of interest.

What year are you in?

Second

You still have time to switch majors then don’t you? Nobody on CC is going to tell you to just “deal with it” and spend the next two years+ getting a major you hate lol.

What drew you to econ in the first place? Understanding that might help with suggestions.

The seeming technicality of it. I’m fairly into more technical majors, and econ seemed to be the most technical non-stem major.

Maybe I spend too much time on the engineering students subreddit, where this is commonplace, but failing a class isn’t the end of many people’s journeys in STEM, and maybe it shouldn’t be yours either.

What was the major? Do you know why you struggled with chem?

The major I was trying to get into was aerospace engineering. I was taking two major classes as well as chem and precalculus. I probably bit off more than I could chew tbh.

Were you more interested in engineering than you are now in econ? Maybe you could retake chem over the summer, perhaps at a community college close to wherever you live, and see if it goes better with your full attention.

Oh man, I hear economics gets very theoretical at upper levels. What about Statistics, Applied Statistics?

Many many students switch majors. Think back to the classes you have taken and do any stand out as being particularly engaging or exciting? Talk to your advisor who can interview you on your strengths and weaknesses. They can help you find a new major.

Switching to engineering will likely means taking more than four years. Engineering requires a strong math foundation which you appear to be behind in. If you haven’t taken Calculus by this point, it could take a long time to graduate as an engineer. Calculus will be a pre-reg for a lot of courses. Most engineering students take it first semester or in high school. You can still go down this road but I am guessing that you will need 3-4 years more years of school. Can you afford it?

You should be able to switch majors easily to a related field. My DD is also a Econ major and decided it was not for her. She is finishing since that works best in her case but she shifted her focus to Stats which she loves.

Have you consider going to the career center is taking some aptitude testing to help you identify your career interest and strengths.

If you straight up couldn’t pass a basic chemistry course do not switch to science.

Have you looked into Engineering tech degrees? They’re supposedly less math and science based and more tech based. That might be a good option if your school has those.
