I'm currently on Academic Suspension but I wanted to Transfer

Hey everyone, I’m in a predicament where I’m not exactly sure how to proceed and wondered if you all could offer any advice.

In my senior year I was accepted into Georgia State - Atlanta Campus, but I only took classes for that summer.
In the fall, I transferred the credit to Howard University, where I’ve spent the past two semesters. I did very poorly at Howard and I was in university counseling all year for depression. Because of this, I planned to transfer back to GSU this semester, either back to the Atlanta campus which is public 4 year college, or the perimeter campus which is the community college division.

I’ve had a hold on my account from Howard all summer so I never saw my grades, and I still haven’t, but I knew I hadn’t done well just from the circumstance. I found out today however, that I was on Academic Suspension, and was no longer in good standing. I plan to appeal the Suspension status from Howard, but that process may take time and my application materials for Georgia State are due today.

I know there are minimum GPA requirements listed on the website, and I know that you’re supposed to be in good academic standing with prior institutions to be admitted into GSU Perimeter or re-admitted into GSU Atlanta, but if I provided documentation of university counseling or if I just didn’t try to transfer any credits from Howard do you think I would be able to attend this semester?

I’m pretty lost at this point and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.

Typically you have to send all transcripts from prior schools. You can’t just omit the fact that you attended Howard.

The new school won’t admit you without a transcript. You have to contact Howard and find out what the hold is.
Your previous admission to the school doesn’t matter.

It seems there are a couple different issues here.

Why do you have a hold on your account? Schools usually do that when the student hasn’t paid all of the tuition owed.

YOU can’t just “not transfer” credit… if you went to Howard, you need to send your transcript to GSU, and it’s up to GSU to decide whether to award credit or not.

My advice: you badly need to speak to an advisor at Howard to find out about that hold on your transcript, and to find out exactly what your GPA is, whether you’re on academic probation or whether you’ve basically flunked out.

But until you know exactly where you stand with Howard, you really won’t be able to proceed and that includes transferring to GSU.

I have a bursar hold because there was a balance on my account, but I paid it today. They just told me the hold wont be actually lifted for 7-10 days. During that phone call she’d asked if I knew I was on academic suspension and I hadn’t. Then she told me that the suspension meant that I couldn’t register, etc. for a semester. It’s basically flunking out, but it’s not a complete dismissal.

So it sounds like you could take a semester off, work, concentrate on dealing with your depression & then go back to Howard and raise your GPA. If you still want to transfer, you could at that point.
