We have assigned reading and every week we have a short quiz (about 10 questions). The problem is, I usually get around a 50%, with the exception of one. This is really bringing down my grade and its frustrating because I am actually doing the reading.

I think its the format. Instead of multiple choice we are given a quote and we have to write who the speaker and addressee is. A lot of times I confuse the two and put them in the wrong order but the characters are the correct ones.

On the exams I am performing on an A level. But the work I put into those will be for nothing because of these stupid quizzes.

Well, if you know the problem is mixing up the speaker/addressee, can’t you just double check your work and be more careful writing them down? From the intent of the quotes you should be able to tell pretty quickly who’s saying it to who… so be more careful when writing it down?

If the problem is not remember which character is speaking, well, that’s a different issue and maybe you should be reading closer, or making sure you’re interpreting what’s going on (at least remembering who takes what side on different issues).

In that case you might also be having trouble simply keeping track of the names. Maybe spend some time just studying the names like you would vocab so that the issue isn’t that you know who the characters are in terms of their roles and what they say/do but simply ascribe the wrong name to them.

Ooh so sad if you are reading how could you fail in your quizzes… I guess you need more concentration or hard working.
You will definitely clear in your quizzes… You spent daily 3 to 4 hours to your studies you will pass your quizzes…

Ancient works can be hard to follow – the names are unfamiliar to us moderns. I was a Classics major. To keep track of the cast of characters, I used to cut pictures out of magazines and assign them. Essentially “casting” the play. I put them on a study sheet. That way, I could more easily picture in mind who was speaking. Remember, these works were written to be performed, not read, so a visual element is part of the intended experience.

I got a C on my first Psychology quiz after reading the textbook chapters not even once, but twice. After that I bought a voice recorder, and started recording the lectures. I read the textbook chapters only once before the next quiz, and listened to the lectures again the day before the test and got an A. Ironic - a much better grade with a lot less work. Maybe you could try a different tactic. Maybe flash cards with the quotes and speaker on index cards?
