Im getting confused!?!?! Help me fellow engineers

This is the problem,
when I surfed the vanderbilt’s site today, I went into SAOP

then I found this in FAQ

I’m an Engineering student. Do I have to take any placement tests? If so, which one(s)?

The School of Engineering requires first year students to take the departmental placement test in math. If you plan to take A&S courses in writing or a foreign language, you will need to take placement tests in those subjects.

I received 620 (Level I)/570 (Level II) on the SAT, do I still have to take a math placement test?

Students who plan to take any math course other than a basic level math class will need to take a departmental placement test, especially students with an interest in math, science, computer science, engineering, or a pre-med track. Faculty advisers use these scores to advise you as to your appropriate placement in math courses.

School of Engineering
The School of Engineering requires the Vanderbilt depart- mental math placement test for all first year students. Advisers may use the results of SAT II Subject Test scores in writing to help place students in appropriate A&S writing courses. Students who plan to continue a foreign language must take the placement test in that language.

I got SAT II mathIIc 800 and I thought I dont have to care about placement test during the orientation. But by this info. it seems that every engineering students have to take it. Am i wrong?

you know, I saw that and wondered the same thing. I guess we have to because it says:

and

No mention is made to how good or how bad the scores are in each case. Apparently a 620 person will still have to take a math placement test as well as an 800 person. I’m no help whatsoever. Maybe you can call them up and find out? But seriously, a placement test shouldn’t give you a hard time, especially after you got an 800 ;).

I would recommend you contact the Engineering registrar (the number is on their websited under the FAQ’s for SAOP) and ask about your situation–The test supposedly tests trigonometry which they said is not really tested on the SAT’s. Your situation may be different, but my son (engineering) got an 800 in Math on the SAT, the SAT IIC, and expects nothing else but a 5 on the Calculus BC AP test, so he will assuredly place out of Calculus. I was told to not sign him up to take the math placement course, but in the unlikely event he doesn’t test out of Calculus he could still take the placement test in the fall before orientation (although it is not as convenient or recommended to take it then). He already had SATII’s in writing and Spanish.

I would imagine that if you only took the math SAT/SATII, you really need to take the placement test since supposedly the placement exam tests different concepts than what is on those tests. I think that only if you are taking the Calculus BC AP exam and get a 4 or 5 would you not need the test, but you will need to clear this with the engineering department first–please don’t take my word for it, ask about your own situation. It is probably easiest to take the test to be sure since the AP results won’t be out until July.

I’m not afraid of SATII mathIIC or any other math things as I am confident in it but I hate the fact that I have to spend some time looking it up and get stressed upon it.

And bandmom I also got full marks on both SATI and II ‘math’ and taking Calc BC for 5. Glad there is someone like me.

Also I sent e-mail to the SAOP (I couldn’t find the engineering department e-mail) so there soon be a reply soon. I’ll post the results.

yhk49:
The number for the Engineering Registrar is (615) 343-8061 .(I would call, not try to just email). I got the stock answer from the SAOP representative about having to take the test, but she referred me to the math department and the engineering registrar. Good luck.

My A&S '06 son started out in Engineering and only took a foreign language placement test. His SAT II tests in writing and math were acceptable for placement purposes. A&S daughter has not taken math, only writing. A contact in A&S told me that as long as she wants only entry level math course there is no need to test. Since tests are $45 a pop, it’s best to check to see if they can be waived.
