I'm going to be a curmudgeon in court of revelers...

a*

After a long day of school and track, I come home, log on to facebook and find this little gem on my university-to-be’s (SCHOOL SPONSORED) “Class of 2016 Page”: [paraphrased but pretty close}

Now, if I were to rate the degree of disgust I felt upon reading this post on a scale of tasting horseradish to waking up in a pool of human stool, I would probably say I was approaching the thought of Ron Jeremy’s feet.

I can tell when a cat is joking over the internet and this cat WAS NOT joking. What’s worse? 55+ likes or something like that.

Now, I knew what I was getting into with this school, and this is a serious post. It is and was a party school. I guess I found myself drawn in by the athletics, “culture” and relative local prestige of the school, but I mean–come on? A school sponsored page goes so far as to tolerate this? (and this was not the only allusion to illegal/downright stupid activities on the page)

I get that people drink. I get that people smoke. I get that people have promiscuous sex. If I were better at any of these things, I’d probably partake–but I’m not, and that’s not what I want from my college experience. I’m not religious–not even a goody-two-shoes, but this post is so inane that it annoys me, and the “Likes” prove to me that I’M the black sheep. I’M the one who most people won’t relate to because I DON’T do these things.

I will be the curmudgeon in a court of revelers, hedonists, and even some miscreants. Some are probably intelligent, smarter than me even, but they don’t seem like my type of person and I’m too stubborn to convert.

I want to go into premed. This was the highest-ranked school I applied to despite having a 31 ACT and a 4.0 uw at the time because I was advised NOT to take on debt before med school. Suppose I get there and I hate it, can I transfer to some magical fairyland where nerds/geeks ARE the predominant culture? Where would I go without shooting myself in the foot (i.e. lowering my prestige standards/taking on unnecessary debt)?

Thanks for listening! Please, help a guy out and respond.

I wouldn’t take such comments as a general adverage of a school, by far.

You have groups of such people at every school (some larger than others of course). My school is the “non-party” one in my states system, yet there are still people who smoke, drink, do god knows what (seriously, *** is so fun being out and about making all sorts of rucus at 4am on a weekday outside of the dorms?).

Bah <.<

Oh who cares? People post stupid crap all the time. Ignore it

Fwiw, I go to a HUGE party school. I rarely have more than a beer. I don’t really party. I’ve had a great 3 years and have received a great education.

I go to the freaking school you’re about to go to. Yeah, there are people like that. They’re stupid and a large proportion of them won’t make it past the first semester. The party culture is here, but it’s not all-encompassing. Please relax, there are lots and lots and LOTS of people here who are nothing like that and who you’d probably enjoy spending time with. This is not something to get worked up about. I know this for a fact because I GO to the school you’re going to go to. I know what it’s like. I’ve been both inside and outside the party culture. Just don’t live in the party dorms and it will be fine. Chill out.

People who post on the FB page are not a very good sample of people who will attend. On my dorm’s FB page (not whole class) pre-move-in, I became convinced that the dorm was like 90% musical theater obsessives. False. 10 of them just posted a lot.

I feel you man. As someone who doesn’t have in interest in any of that kind of stuff, that post disgusts me. Sadly, in my experience, almost everyone in college does those things.

Nothing more depressing than finding that one really hot girl on campus only to find out she gets black out drunk every weekend.

Have you only met like 5 people who go to college? Then I could understand your skewed perception.

No. Not “almost everyone in college”. Not even close. It’s dumb to even claim that. You need to meet more people if you think that’s true.

I’d take Rox’s advice to heart since she goes to your uni and has probably experienced these jackasses first hand.

Trust me, these people who play hard and hardly work tend to group together. You’ll only have to deal with them if you choose to do so. Instead, associate with the cool people who know how to have a good time but haven’t forgotten why they/their parents are paying a ton of money each year.

Yeah, that’s another thing - those people aren’t going to be trying to hang out and party with you. They will stay in their own dorms and leave you alone. The worst you will have to deal with is occasional noise (depending where you live) and some occasional beer cans thrown around the street on Monday mornings. You will find plenty of people like you and you all will avoid these people together. Trust me. I’ve seen them.
