I’m a rising junior. I live in Houston and would want to talk with somebody from the department about this school, hopefully they will help me make up my mind about Rice. Yet at the same time I don’t know what to say, I just know about this school and the programs they offer.
What questions should I ask?
Thank you

Which department within the school of social science are you interested in? I would recommend going to that department’s website, looking through the major requirements, courses offered, department size, etc., and looking through that should help you think of things to ask (if the information present is not enough). Hope that helps! I am in social science so if you have anything specific you want to ask you can PM me.

you could walk into the department you are interested in and talk to them. Just start at the coordinator and see who is available to talk to.

I will call the school tomorrow to work something out. But will this be judged like one of the on campus interview, especially when I have not possessed a deep knowledge about that specific department

Like if you just go in and talk with a professor or department coordinator? I highly doubt they will keep tabs of how knowledgeable your questions were or anything…more likely they will record that you visited and “demonstrated interest.”

i dont think they will do that either. With the exception of athletes, and the archi dept and musi dept, the department doesnt have say in who is admitted (as far as I know in the UG level)

Demonstrated interest is through admissions

If you’re simply looking to demonstrate interest, I would sign up for the tour and maybe an appointment with an admissions officer. But if you want to learn more about the social science dept and majors, then definitely try and talk with a prof! I recommend Professor Anton Villado. He was a great in undergrad Psychology 101.

Mikki Hebl is the prof for Psyc 202 (Social Psyc) . She is incredible as well. I haven’t taken a class with Dr. Villado but have heard good things.
