I'm lost

I had everything set and stone. I had thought I wanted to pursue architecture because I am decent at art and like designing but i am just not sure anymore. I am currently in an internship at an architecture firm and I hate the office life. I never thought I would dislike CAD and Revit so much. I am also very interested in conservation and biology which is why landscape architecture seemed interesting but again the whole office job and using CAD all the time got to me. IS this what life is like for an architect or am I completely wrong. I love ecology and zoology type things but are the job prospects good?

Well, you are getting a peek into the architecture world at one firm. Some of what you’re experiencing might be the nature of architecture itself, and some might be because of the firm, and some might be because you’re an intern. it’s really hard to say.

One way to find out is to do some informational interviews with currently working architects in your area. Most working professionals would be happy to give a half hour or so to help a current college student understand their career and whether or not they want to do it. You can prepare some questions ahead of time to ask about to help gauge your true interest in the career.

If you are interested in design and conservation and biology, other majors may appeal to you - like earth systems sciences/geosciences, ecology and evolutionary biology, environmental engineering (although that might not get you away from CAD), industrial design (ditto) and environmental sciences. Explore some other majors, too - take some classes and see if something strikes you.

How is the firm you’re at set up? Do the architects do all their CAD and Revit work, or are there CAD technicians who do it? I don’t think most architects do all their own drafting. By the way, I hate Revit with a passion. I’m a structural engineer, but I do a lot of CAD for the firm I co-own with my husband.
