Woodford Reserve for me.

Always knew you had good taste, gadad!! Have 2 numbered bottles of Woodford in the cabinet (and see the discussion in the link in post #84). Have you had Eagle Rare? Thats some fine sippin’ liquor.

are we allowed over even if we hate martinis??

I saw “petite” martini glasses at Pier 1 today.

I have made a dedicated, decades-long, scientific study of Bourbon. Seriously. Bourbon has been my preferred adult beverage for 30+ years. While it’s true that “chacun a son gout” here’s my personal take:

Bourbons come in three main families: mellow, “with bite” and “just plain nasty.” Examples: Mellow: Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, Bulleit. “With bite”: Knob Creek, Wild Turkey. Just plain nasty: Ten High, Four Roses.

I had a blind taste test for a couple dozen of my closest friends a couple of years ago. Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, Ancient Age, Knob Creek and Bulleit - all decanted into unmarked, numbered bottles, each one drunk neat. Most of the participants in the “study” preferred Makers or Woodford if they had a preference; many didn’t know Bourbon from Scotch or Rye.

The results were one clear winner and a variety of interesting observations. First, not one of the participants correctly identified a single whiskey. A couple of 20-something testers correctly noted that the Knob Creek was higher proof than the others. The most frequent (and incorrect) guess at identifying a whiskey was to ID Ancient Age as Woodford Reserve.

The clear winner? Ancient Age. By a statistically significant margin. This is interesting because (1) Ancient Age was by far the least expensive drink in the test; and (2) Ancient Age is my favorite “sipping whiskey.” (When most of the participants in the “study” - drawn from my snooty affluent home town - found out that AA was the winner, they were appalled. One went out and bought a bottle, but admitted to me later: “I couldn’t bring myself to bring it out and pour a drink out of a plastic bottle I bought at Walgreens.”)

If you’re not similarly afflicted, I recommend Ancient Age. If you’re uncomfortable drinking anything that’s in the lower 20% of pricing, Makers Mark and Woodford Reserve are good substitutes in a higher price range.

For those of you who like Knob Creek (and it’s a good whiskey, too, for those looking for a smokier, higher proof beverage) Costco is selling house-branded bourbon which is for all practical purposes Knob Creek at $20 for a full liter bottle.

Have done similar unscientific studies with Vodka…all my loafer wearin’ frinds who LOVE Grey Goose were mortified when not a single one could pick it out of a 4 brand sample…study included Grey Goose,Smirnoff,Skyy and Belvedere…Skyy got the most votes, which happens to be my favorite all purpose vodka…Goose is solid up or with a cube or 2… Mixing an ‘upscale’ vodka(or any liquor) with a fruit jjuice or mixer(aside from tonic, perhaps) is wasting good money…

My bourbon is Makers Mark, though i will give Ancient a taste test if my own

Have you tried Eagle Rare, kluge?

Can’t say that I have ever seen Eagle Rare. I don’t usually focus on “single barrel” bourbons, though. In my opinion there’s not really any good reason to bottle “single barrel” bourbon, and the fact that they tout that factor kind of turns me off. That’s not to say it can’t be an excellent bourbon, however.

I forgot to mention - Buffalo Trace is another excellent mellow bourbon, highly recommended, at the Maker’s Mark price point. After Ancient Age it’s my current #2.

Just gave a customer a bottle of Woodford Reserve as a thank-you gift. It was very well received. Called me up to thank me in person. I suspect he’d been sampling the bottle. lol

I prefer a pomegranate martini myself. Love olives, but not in my drink. I know I’m missing out, but can’t seem to acquire the taste for a true martini.

colmomto2, if you like pomegranate flavored liqueur, I highly recommend Pama. :)

http://www.pamaliqueur.com

That $9 Manhatten is costing me about a $1.
No ice, and I only have a satsuma tangerine. Smashing. (-><-)

my wife doesn’t love me, and my mom is mad at me. :(

Ooooh! Thanks, BB.

A funny story to share - went to the company holiday party last Saturday night. The owner of the company sent out a reminder the day before the party and included “bring your holiday cheer” in her message. One of my colleagues interpreted that to mean she should bring alcohol. When she arrived at the party, she walked up to the open bar and handed the bartender a jug of pomegranate margaritas. Once we stopped laughing, we all happily helped her drink the evidence. :)

Put me down as a bourbon drinker. Never understood the appeal of wine or various cocktails but a splash of good bourbon (DH buys me Woodford Reserve and Blanton’s) on the rocks with sparkling water and I’m very happy. I know you’re not suppose to pollute with water but that’s my drink and I’m sticking to it. Single malt scotches are completely wasted on me.

My grandmother who passed away at 101 loved her Jack Daniels. A little snort every day.

Did the bourbon fans on this thread know they can visit the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky? [Kentucky Bourbon Trail](http://www.kybourbontrail.com/)

Sipping a martini, and had to revisit this thread…
