I'm really interested in law school but am unsure if i'd be a good fit

Hi everyone!

So basically, I’m a junior, about to be a senior, at a four-year private university. I am a Communications major and a very good student, I have a 4.0 GPA overall at my current school, but because I transferred in I believe that my overall GPA (combined with the GPA from my previous school) is a 3.8 ( I didn’t do well in freshman math and science). Lately, I have been seriously considering law school. I love writing and doing research, and I really enjoy studying and learning. In particular, I enjoy the critical side of writing; doing in-depth critiques on the way that systems oppress people and writing very long papers. I feel like I would succeed in law school because I am comfortable with committing my entire life to my studies, writing, and researching. I truly think that my academic interests are geared towards law school. Previously, I was very interested in PR, but after doing multiple internships in PR I realized I wanted to be more academically challenged and wanted to research and write more. However, I am slightly apprehensive about going into law school as I am starting a bit late, have not done law internships, am not as good at taking tests, and I am slightly bad at public speaking. Regarding public speaking, I am good at it but only after practicing a lot, as I tend to have problems with my annunciation. I am not exactly sure which law I would be interested in going into, but the fields of business, entertainment, and sports law interest me. I am planning on taking the LSAT next year. I really feel like this is what I am meant to do in life, but feel a bit apprehensive, and would appreciate any advice that other people that have been/are currently in my situation could give me.

Thank you!

A few points:

  1. You are right to be concerned that you have not done internships in law. You wisely did internships in PR and learned you didn't like it. The same could be true for law. Luckily, you have plenty of time to go do internships in law. Go spend some time with actual lawyers actually practicing and see what law is really like. Then come back.
  2. There's no such thing as "late" for law schools. Law schools have no prerequisites other than an undergrad degree and the LSAT (or for a few, GRE). Plus, most students have a year or two of work experience anyways (average age to enter law school is 25). You have plenty of time, so do this right.
  3. With a 3.8 GPA you are in very good stead. You should, when it comes time, focus on getting a top LSAT score. There's no reason you can't take it a couple times. I recommend LSAT classes, which I found helpful.
  4. Law involves very little public speaking, even if you do litigation. There's basically none on the transactional side.

Sounds more like grad school to me.

The latter two are just subsets of business law, i.e., law that focuses on businesses.

Not typically an interest of “business”.

You’re not at all too late to be thinking about law school. But I do think it would be smart not to apply straight from undergrad. Try a job that will give you a better sense of the legal industry and what kind of lawyer you want to be before you sink the money and time into law school.

Not many lawyers get to do “in-depth critiques on the way that systems oppress people” and certainly not any in sports or entertainment law. Also, there are not that many legal jobs in sports/ entertainment and they’re probably not quite as sexy as you might think.
