So over the past few weeks I have been filling out my college applications and submitting them, and I have suddenly become very nervous I won’t get into any college. I attend a very tough private school but only have a 3.0 GPA. However I do have a 1400 on the SATs. I am currently taking 4 A.Ps, and am involved in numerous organizations. I hate to give excuses but my mom was diagnosed with cancer mid-way through my 9th grade year and it really took a toll on me and my grades through out high school, which is why I wrote about it in my college essays/personal statements. With my high SATs, active participation in clubs, and my family emergency through out high school, will this be enough to off-set my bad GPA?
A 3.0 is going to make things dicey for you, but curriculum rigor and good SAT scores will help.
4 applications really isn’t much though and you’d probably do better with a private college that has holistic review.
Add CNU, VCU, and/or UMW.
What about adding Roanoke and Guilford as safeties?
UNC Asheville, Eckerd, Rollins, College of Charleston as matches?
Probably Elon and Rhodes as reaches?
Which of the places on your list is one that your own guidance counselor has told you has never rejected a student like you from your high school? That would be your safety.
Nothing like that on your list? Then go meet with your counselor and find one.
Thanks for the advice, I just got back my first college decision from Elon and turns out I got accepted. Pretty excited at this point knowing I will at least be going somewhere.
