Hey everybody. I’m taking the SATS this Saturday for the first time and I am extremely nervous. I’ve done some practice but not an absurd amount. I would really appreciate some tips and tricks. I struggle with the essay section in coming up with an intro sentence/paragraph. I was thinking of use classic literature such as Lord of the Flies, 1984, Of Mice and Men, etc. Also, is it okay to use “I” or “me”, and write about personal experiences? How should I tackle the essay? For the math section, I tend to know the content but I struggle with time management. I usually don’t finish and it’s not because I don’t know how to to do the problem, instead I take a long time to do the math problems. Since there usually isn’t a curve on a the math section, this makes me very anxious. Thank you all for you help. I appreciate it
Haha i basically have the same situation. Taking the SAT this Saturday, having problems on essays and time management.
For the essay: remember that this is an argument. It requires planning. This 4-5 minutes is very much worth it. Make a “T” chart where you have a “yes” answer to the specifics of the question on one side and “no” answer to the Q on the other side. Use a bullet-dash system in your T chart notes. Bullet: abstract claim. Dash: specific example. Here’s a sample, using abbreviated ideas, not complete sentences.
“Is knowledge ever a burden”.
Bullet: Knowledge of the suffering affects goals of rich
Dash-Some rural communities in the deep South suffer low grad rates. Rich student uses this knowledge to make a life-choice. Skips cushy 9-5 job in finance and volunteers instead in impov. sch districts.
Bullet: new claim
Dash- new ex supporting claim
Bullet: new claim
Dash-new ex supporting claim
Yes, “I” examples are fine. When you prep for the next test, take time to write out the plot details of some books for English class. Review bios of interesting people in history. Then you’ll have more you can use.
I also highly recommend Mike McClenathan’s PWN the SAT essay book. I also like the essay prep ideas in McGraw Hill SAT. (But not their practice tests or math sections)
AND if nothing else: read samples of 6/6 essays in the blue book or online
Good luck!!
Ah okay, tysm.
