hello as the title goes, I have been thinking about my chance of admission into U of C, which is right at the top of my priority list.

Here are my stats:

Teachers Recommendation
I have no idea, should be decent.

Essays
Not a very good writer, but I tried my best to be good and creative.

Very interesting, especially our ECs. I must say I got in with less ECs and scores, but engaging essays. I have no idea how yours look, but if they are anywhere near good, you should have no problem at all getting in.

hey thanks for the post. in Singapore, there is no GPA, i only took the A Levels, so i guess i would have to rely on SATs scores, which honestly aren’t v impressive. Anyway so u r in which year now? majoring in?

Hey, don’t call your 2100 SATs not that great, they are equivalent to the old 1400 which was damn good. I got in EA with a 2030!

ECs are really cool, but U of C cares a lot on essays. I wrote some good essays, but with your impressive Is and IIs and ECs, unless your essays were very unintersting, I would say you have a really nice shot (being from singapore is cool too).

BTW, there have been threads talking about how international students only know about the Ivies–how is it that you heard of the U of C, and how do others you know in Singapore know about it?

When you say “National,” do you mean it in the true sense of the word? Are you a nationally competitive table tennis player? If so, I’d say your chances are increased dramatically.

I just thought of this. No offense to the OP, but sinapore is a city-state sorta. So I guess being nationally best isn’t as good as say, being nationally best of China or Germany since they have much, much more competition. Still, even being best in Sinapore is a far out achivement.

Singapore is known for its ridiculously rigorous educational standards, don’t know about sports except Martial Arts, where it is a world contender.

Haha I initially tot 2100 was ok too but when I got to know collegeconfidential, I started to thk 2100 is not tat good!
wat’s ‘OP’? National I mean I represented the nation before but yes JM8879 is correct, local national (Singapore) players are certainly not as good as those in europe and china. My A level results are A A B B, which HONESTLY isn’t that good too. but heck, just hope I can get into Chicago.

OP is ‘original poster’ - the person who started this thread - you!

UChicago has limited funding for internationals - and it does make it more difficult if you are requesting aid. In any case, you sound like an interesting person - and it this came across in your essays you should have a good shot.

Oh and actually in Singapore U of Chi is well-known to people who are planning to pursue an education in US, but no doubt, for those who aren’t planning to, the ivies are certainly more popular. As for me, I found out about this school from friends and through ‘researching’ when I was deciding which schools to apply. I am glad I found it. Haha.

Yup I have heard that there are limited funding for internationals at all schools so I didn’t even dare think about it. Didn’t want to ruin any chances.

Well, make sure you are generous with your emails and calls to your folks when you are at Chicago (or whichever school is lucky enough to get you) - they’re obviously good people to let you apply without checking the Finaid box, and they will be missing you a lot next year!

I do have a piece of advice, though - try to focus on some else for the next couple of months. The last week before you get your results is pretty intolerable as far as the anticipation goes. The time before that can be fun - enjoying your friends and family, going to movies, and so on.

heya ohio_mom thanks for your wonderful advice. They are good. By the way, roughly, when will we get to know the results? I must get prepared for the intolerable week. Haha.
