Hey guys,

My friend Neverborn suggested that I bounce my idea of a “unique” transfer app. off of the Chicago forum. I figured that my chances of getting into chicago are slim to none, so I need something that would be a clear example of why I’m not just a cookie cutter state school clone. My post with my sats can be found here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=238187.

Anyways, my idea was to send them some type of customized product with a slogan on it. The purpose would be to point out some parallel between me being a psychology major and the product being an example of psychology.

I just got this idea today and thus I haven’t developed it much.

My question to you guys is:

Do you think the U. Chicago Applications board would appreciate this or would it be looked down upon? I thought I had heard that they are keen on somewhat unusual delivery methods. If this is the case, what would cross the line?

Thanks everyone

Specifically, he thought that it would be a good idea to send adcoms shirts that said “You know you want (slyjoker’s name).” I said it was a dumb idea, and that (most) admits as well as parents such as ohio_mom/idad should comment on it. ;)

That was just the base idea. If it were actually going to work, it would have to be more sophiticated and would have to tie into my reason for applying.

Ok, taking the hint. The concept is an interesting place to start. The place you have to get to, however, is the content. If the ultimate content of your presentation is interesting - and somehow illuminates your creativity and thought process - then maybe you have something.

I have a suggestion. Once classes start up, tag along with your friend neverborn for a day or two to get a better feel for the university. I believe that you will find that a bit of humor is well received - but glitz, much less so.

Hey, a friend of neverborn!

I must say that your idea does sound interesting - but how the admissions office will take it, I do not know. Granted, I did take a risk myself when I wrote an essay making fun of my family’s strange habit of hoarding things, a take-off on the mustard jar essay question from the year prior. It was risky, I think, but, for me, it worked.

I think the trick with admissions is coming up with interesting things about yourself and presenting them in a way that will pursuade the admissions committee to accept you. I have multiple things I exhibited - homeschooling, my interest in Classics, music composition. The university wants you to answer the question, “Why should we pick you out of all the applicants? What makes an interesting/quirky/intellectual person and a good fit for the U. of C.?” My test scores were not the best (though they were good), but evidently I exhibited more than that to gain admission.

Yes,

I know I need to show them why I’m not straight fromt he cookie cutter. I’m thinking I’m going to have to go for broke on this one. If I am really material for the U of C, it will show.

Thanks for helping guys.

Katharos, you’re back from forum isolation! And not on AIM! :P

on edit: Or on Faceook!
