I'm Way Too Late, Aren't I?

I got into boys state, but i’ve been looking at other good summer programs to apply for; things that pertain to my hook (journalism) and it seems like everything has already been decided. Is this the case? Does anyone know of any summer programs still available?

This is interesting, as I went to Girls State back in 1975 BECAUSE I wanted to major in journalism (which I did). I’m not sure what aspect of the business you are interested in (I was in print), but you spend alot of time as a newbe covering city and county gov, then state gov. If you want a good summer “program” I suggest writing editorials to your local newspaper, or magazines you like, and try to get published (first read the editorials they publish to get an idea of what they are looking for). You’ll learn something, get lots of writing experience, and maybe even get published (which will look good on your resume). The best part is that is cost you nothing, and you can do it on your on time.

^ Wolfpackmom Great Idea… May want to try online media too.

I like the idea of writing for your local newspaper. I’ve heard of local papers having a teen columnist who publishes an editorial from time to time.

Also, here are some summer programs that have previously been mentioned on CC. I don’t know if the deadlines have passed so check out each website. The Princeton one is for families with under $45,000 income and is free. I think the others cost, but at least one wasn’t uber-bucks. I have no idea as to the quality of the programs.

You don’t need to be a “teen columnist” to write an editorial for a newspaper or magazine. Ordinary people do it every single day, and get published. And after you read the paper (or however you get your news) go spend some time doing volunteer work at the soup kitchen, or go sit with the elderly at the nursing home. You will find lots to write about. Listen, look around, write about it.
