iMac or Macbook?

So I’m making the switch from pc to mac. I saw the iMac, and I think I like it. If you have one, are you happy with it, or do you wish you would have gotten the Macbook instead?

I haven’t used a desktop computer for my home computer since Apple allowed clones.
Then again I don’t like to use a desk either even though I have a perfectly gorgeous tiger oak rolltop.

The new macbook pros are pretty sweet.

We have a iMac (for the kids) and I have a MacBook. I rarely use the iMac because I like sitting wherever I want with my MacBook and not being constrained to one room.

If you get a Macbook, you should consider the bigger size. H got the smaller one and regrets it.

15" Macbook Pro, it will be the best purchase you will ever make.

Traded in my old Dell desktop for the 27-inch Imac recently. I love it. So nice not to have to worry about viruses, for one thing. Then there’s the huge big gorgeous screen which is very nice for aging eyes like mine. Then the wireless keyboard and mouse and complete absence of a cpu tower and the incredible ease of use of the operating system. From getting out of the box to being completely functional was maybe 30 minutes. Also, love the iphoto application - very intuitive and again the big beautiful screen display makes working with photos a real pleasure.

I thought about the Macbook. College son has one loves it but I really don’t need to carry my computer around with me and I love the great big screen.

Sometimes Apple annoys me because it’s so cool but they really do have the customer orientation perfected. They are like the Nordstrom of personal computing.

We have the 27 inch iMac, MacBook Pros and the iPad. They all have their place.

I don’t think there is much point to desktops for personal use anymore. I am very pleased with my MacBook Pro and was very happy with my iBook before that–it was wonderful to be portable. (I used an iMac at work in a publishing office years ago when I still had a desktop PC at home and certainly the iMac was great, but I wouldn’t get anything other than a portable computer for my own use at this point.)

I am sure there will be some kind of cancer of the thigh discovered—and my husband and daughter will have it! They have their macbooks(15") permenantly adheared to their laps (should have been a lapbook!). They love everything about them—my husbands is 3 years old and just keeps plugging away. Best part----totally virus free.

I have had a 15" but my current is 13" and it is much easier to haul around.

I have used Apple computers for twenty years, and had to listen to scathing comments from PC users about how easy the Mac OS was to use, * like that was a bad thing*, so the recent arrival of Macs as a fashionista must have just makes me lol.

All student-athletes at the University of South Florida are issued 13" MacBook Pros. The 13" size McBook Pro is easy to lug around, and in general is a great machine.

http://usfweb3.usf.edu/absolutenm/templates/?a=1888&z=31

DS got a MacBook Air thin, plus a 25 or 27" monitor.
The macbook for portibility, the big monitor for detailed picture and CAD work.

You can get a 13" laptop, add a keyboard, mouse and larger monitor and use that setup at your desk. Odds that you need the extras that the 15" model has are slim. All these machines are powerful.

I have another question. I found a site called MacRumors:Buyers Guide. They list each product and tell you where it is in the product cycle. They say not to buy a macbook now, because it will be updated soon, and to only buy the iMac if you need it now because it is approaching the end of a cycle.

This is not something I ever paid attention to with pcs. Should I care about this with macs or is this really just information for the person who simply must have the newest thing?

There’s no easy answer to that question. Often, a major upgrade is anticipated. If that is the case, obviously you want to wait to get the new and improved machine. But other times, it’s just a tweak. I usually like to buy the latest device out there because they get obsolete so fast anyway.

By the way, I have my iMac over a year now and just love it. Watching TV shows on hulu.com is great on the wide screen.

The 27 inch iMac has higher resolution than the MacBook Pro (even the 17 inch model). It is true that you can attach an external monitor to the MacBook Pro but desktops give you added performance features that laptops can’t match comfortably. You can get a Core i7 in a MacBook Pro but I’ve read several reports of MacBook Pros hitting over 100 degrees C with those configurations under load.

A desktop provides more room for airflow or more surface area to conduct heat away from components. The desktop gives you 3.5 inch hard drives which can have far more capacity and better performance than notebook drives. You can get better graphics cards on desktops and you can put in far more memory. Furthermore, you do not have to plug and unplug devices when you set up.

If you’re doing video editing or software development, the performance with faster drives, more processor cores and more memory can be noticeable.

I am also in the market for a laptop. What is the difference between MacBook and MacBook Pro? Is MacBook Pro worth the extra expense?

There really isn’t a plain MacBook anymore unless you’re talking the one model at the bottom of the line that’s still white plastic - though it is uni-body white plastic. The $200 difference gets you more RAM and better graphics capability. Oh, and an SD card slot. I think the cost about equals the value difference. You can certainly do fine with the cheaper one but you then should upgrade the RAM and the only way to save the money is to do that yourself. You can’t upgrade the graphics or add a slot though you can attach a reader (of course). So my advice is buy the cheapest Pro version. But wait until they announce their back-to-school special for the year because then you should be able to get a free ipod.

i am getting the 13" pro. If anyone is worried about an upgrade coming soon, then it has already happened (in April).

The 15" Pro models have a newer chip design. That won’t filter into the 13" model for at least a year. I wouldn’t worry about it. To be honest, a 4 year old laptop is plenty powerful enough today; we haven’t seen either massive speed increases or massive needs for more speed as we did when the megahertz race was on. There are some neat technologies coming, but none are essential to almost anyone’s computing needs.
