Imitating Ivy students

There was a person at my school who got into Harvard and Cornell last year. She was an avid reader and a great writer. Now, everyone is trying to imitate her by reading so many books when they wouldn’t even touch a book if it weren’t for the Harvard girl. Ttype of imitation is just pathetic. It’s almost like worshipping a demigod, doing exactly what she does.

For me, I can’t care less about her b/c she and I don’t have too many similarities. She writes excellently, I get C’s on essays, she has a photographic memory etc etc.

Are there CCer’s out who are just fed up with people going “OMG, in order to get into the Ivy League, I must do this this, and that.”?

Putting the “Ivy thing” aside, she was a great role model and I would not bash my kids for “immitating” her by reading more books :)

I can see where you’re coming from, but I guess anything to help educate America helps.

lol, i feel you on not trying to imitate her but i think it’s a good way for your peers to feel empowered to learn. In my school there are tons of people who are like that girl cuz it’s a prep school and all, but the thing is that we take those people as examples to work harder, not just for Ivy admissions but for a greater passion to learn. Just my two cents.

Haha, but do they understand the symbolisms, motifs, etc. of the book? Would they be able to give an in depth analysis of the characters? I think not.

Well, at least they care about their future.

hah. this might be more a function of SATs. There isn’t any “Harvard” girl who read a lot, but people who wouldn’t even read ASSIGNED books are trying to make up for lost time…

If all the underclassmen here took after my example they’d be pretty shamballin.

hate those kind of people…

the prolem is that these people the op mentioned prolly were smart kids anyways. NOw they are not being for real and imitating somebody so they can get into college.
It would be another thing if a kid who is almost dropping out decides to act like this girl.

^ for the drop out kid then, that’d be actually really inspiring.

Why would anyone want to imitate a WASP? :P

Wow… does this really happen? I’d like to live in a place where universities aren’t ranked so much…

Places where universities aren’t ranked generally just have a ton of mediocre universities :(

Frankly, I’d like the U.S. to stop ranking their universities, though I doubt it’s going to happen. I don’t know that the U.K. does, yet they still have universities such as Dublin, Oxford, Cambridge, etc.

lmao…i can so imagine that. like, people putting on glasses just because the harvard girl has glasses

1)Oh yes they DO rank in the UK, and are at least as obsessed about it as the US. There are also various ‘world rankings’ but it is almost impossible to compare colleges and universities of different systems.

2)You are supposed to be an intelligent prospective college student. Dublin is not in the UK. Learn geography.

I’ve seen quite a few people try to imitate the Harvard-bound students at my school. It’s really quite sad.

they all fail
