<p>My son’s 11th grade report card just arrived in the mail. He ended the semester with a C+ in Advanced Math. What impact will this have on him getting admitted to a mechanical engineering program? His GPA is 3.61. He scored 2160 on the SAT. His current top two choices are UCSD and Cal Poly SLO.</p>

<p>UCSD is all about points, which are based primarily on gpa+test scores and then soft factors. Unless you are low income, your S is first gen to go to college, or other important UC soft factors, UCSD is a big reach with a 3.6 gpa; engineering is even more competitive, since it tends to be a fall back for kids that don’t get into Cal or UCLA engineering.</p>
