Hey, I’ve applied to Berkeley for electrical engineering and computer science. I was wondering whether being the principal author of an IEEE Research Paper published to an International Conference would have a significant impact on an EECS decision. My UC GPA is 4.3 and I got a 2190 on the SAT.

BTW, IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

I certainly hope that you left a link for your paper or citation that clearly indicates what your paper is. Certainly don’t expect that the admission readers will spend the time to go over it b/c very few people people are smart enough to read research papers in the first place. It’s an impressive achievement, and you just gotta leave it to them if this special achievement can get them excited and give you a boost in admission.

Looking at the other stats though, unless you wrote a very uninspiring essay, I think the GPA and the SAT scores are solid enough to get in. The easiest part of Berkeley is getting in, so don’t worry too much about it for now.

Published Research papers do help a lot! I think I was able to draw attention to my research work because I left a link for the research paper in the Universit’s Website( I published my research in the University I did a research internship in).It does not count as “publishing” but the key is to make it sound as prestigious as possible.
