Impacted Majors at UW

Hey

What majors, if any, are impacted at UW? I want to major in business, but I dont think i will get accepted for that major. I’m an OOS and have a 3.7 and 2050 SAT. I want to go to UW really bad and am thinking about majoring in political science and then transferring to the business school. Also, how difficult is to switch majors?

Thanks

“Impacted”? I’m guessing you’re from California. Heh. Hope you get a new license plate if you decide to go to the UW.

Most people don’t get into the major they want straight out of high school. Instead, you take gen ed your first two years and then try to declare a major. Some are open admission (declare whenever), some have minimum requirements (declare upon completing requirements), and some are competitive (complete requirements with the highest grades you can manage to get).

[UW Advising - List of Majors](http://www.washington.edu/uaa/gateway/advising/majors/majoff.php)

As you can see, polisci just has minimum requirements. I hear the hyper-competitive majors are bioengineering (pre-med gunners galore), computer science (geeks who practically already taught themselves what the degree entails back in high school), and neurobiology (pre-med gunners who kinda got into Freud at some point).

Your GPA seems average for a UW acceptee (assuming it’s unweighted) and your SAT is above average. I’d say you have a good shot. I hope you’ve at least visited the school, though.

yup yup, so cal student. and thanks for the info.
my gpa is weighted, but i do have outstanding EC’s.
I plan to visit hopefully in the next few weeks, the latest by thanksgiving break

Well, UW only looks at unweighted GPA. If your unweighted is under 3.5, it’ll be a reach.

And if you haven’t yet visited the school but already want to go there “really bad” then I’m forced to ask why?

Ive been to Seattle before and I really liked it there.

Well if straight overcast from September-May is your idea of a fun place to be then go for it

Sorry to sound like a negative nancy but I’ve met way too many people here who came here for school without any idea of what it’s like during non-summer months. Depressing.

^^I agree. The summer is practically the only time you actually feel/see the sun. :)

Good luck. Make sure you research the area very well before you make your choice.

B-b-but today is pretty sunny :P

…yeah, most of the time it’s definitely cloudy. But it’s not horrible (varying degrees of cloudiness exist), and there are occasional sunny days like today.

To someone from California, it would seem pretty horrible. As would OOS tuition D:
