Hi,

I’m thinking about architecture as a career and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I’ve got kinda an interesting situation.

I’ve got about a 3.75/4.0 or a 4.25/5.0 gpa thanks to about 10 AP courses. I’m taking physics and I love it, even though I’m not very good at and don’t like math so much (I took precalculus and then AP statistics instead of calculus). I like art a lot, though I’ve only taken it 3 out of 4 years due to scheduling issues. A few years ago I shadowed an architect, and I’ve found myself doing relatively simple computer models of buildings for fun in recent months after being inspired by a project for world history in which I constructed a virtual model of a cathedral. These combined with the thought about my career provoked by the college decision brought me to architecture, which I think I’d like to give a try in college. I’m not sure enough about this to commit to it for the rest of my life without trying it first, but I am sure enough to enroll and see if it’s something I can do.

My options right now (since I decided to try this so late in my application process) are as follows:

University of Kentucky (4+2, I might want to go somewhere else for graduate school)
University of Cincinnati (prearchitecture here; I don’t know that I’m competitive enough to get into the full architecture program during the second year but I’d like to think that this might be a graduate option)
Centre College (here I’d get an unrelated degree, probably in history, and then go to graduate school for architecture)

My parents want me to go to Centre, and though they do support my architectural aspirations, they don’t want me to go to UK, which would be my first choice for an undergrad architecture school (considering the competition at UC). Their lack of enthusiasm is probably because my girlfriend attends UK and I’ve looked mostly at schools in the area to be both near home and near her. They’re afraid I’m deciding this irrationally. My parents may not pay for school if I decide to go to UK because they feel so strongly about this. This is causing me a lot of frustration, but I’m willing to do what I have to in order to attend there if that ends up being what I decide to do.

Though I feel that I could go either to Centre or UK and be fairly happy with myself, my gut feeling has me going to UK even though Centre has offered me much more money (yet is still more expensive than UK). I’m fairly anxious to test myself in architecture next year, and UK’s being the only accredited school in Kentucky gives it (from what I’ve heard) a good regional reputation. My response to UK’s offer is due on the 17th of April, and I’m looking for all the advice I can get before then, especially from people going through the same sort of thing or already in the business.

Anything would be appreciated,
Thanks very much.
