I am a sophomore in my local two year school whose intention has always been two transfer for the fall term of my junior year.
I switched my major from chemistry to international relations (I was studying chem for all the wrong reasons) after the fall semester of my sophomore year.
I feel pretty good about transferring with a 3.58 GPA from a rigorous honors program, however, I only have one semester of coursework related to my new major which is the major I applied as at each school. I was rejected at UF even though I feel I was pretty competitive and later learned that UF has a “recommended” list of courses I should have already completed prior to transferring, which I was no where near fulfilling.
Is this going to be a problem for me as I hear decisions back from more schools? I am very passionate about international relations but I have little coursework completed towards the major.
I’m still waiting on: FSU, UVA, American University, and GWU.
As a transfer to FSU, if you have a 3.0 GPA and your AA and you are applying to a non-limited access program, and meet the pre-reqs for the major, you’re pretty likely to be accepted.
International Relations at FSU (International Affairs major) isn’t limited access. You should be fine with a 3.58 GPA if you have most of the pre-reqs for the major down. FSU will drag their feet in making a decision but usually it isn’t a big deal what your “major” at a community college is.
Well, seeing as I have only one semester’s worth of courses towards International Affairs it wouldn’t seem that I have most of the pre-reqs done, but then again, this is what FSU’s College of Social Science and Public Policy says about transfer pre-reqs for International Affairs students:
“There is no prerequisite coursework for the major, but students are encouraged to take lower-level introductory courses in some of the participating disciplines. Such courses serve as background for the major and may meet prerequisites for more advanced courses in the major. CPO 2002 is prerequisite for higher-level courses in Comparative Politics; INR 2002 is prerequisite for higher level courses in International Relations; ECO 2013 and 2023 are prerequisite for some higher level courses in economics.”
