I have been a member of the AVID program 10-12 grade. As a member I have spent numerous hours helping and tutoring other students on their academics. Along with this we have also done a fair amount of community service. Is AVID a solid thing to put on my college app that shows my ambition for learning and becoming a better student?

For me, I had to look up what AVID was. Glad you’ve been able to be a part of it. Is it better/worse than the committed Mock Trial guy or the girl who is a devoted Varsity athlete? It’s a nice EC and the sort typical of motivated and involved students. Will it drop anyone’s jaw? No.

Avid is a double interest for colleges: it shows commitment, as you mentioned. But it also signals to some elite colleges who are trying to recruit high-achieving, first-gen/low income students, that they should pay special attention to you.
The colleges most interested will be listed here:

This will also allow them to direct you to specific programs (like “upward bound”) at their college, with perhaps a fly-in or summer session, etc.
For many large, number-driven universities, this won’t matter, though.
