For full IB diploma students, do highly selective US colleges still want to see independent research or is an extended essay in a science subject and all the other research based coursework enough to satisfy this element of the application?
Despite what you see here or on Reddit, there is no such requirement. And very, very, very few 17 year-olds perform “research” that is meaningful.
Thank you
EE, in any subject of interest, shows your ability to work independently and conduct level-appropriate research. It’s more than most HS ever do.
Research means grad school, except for some advanced college juniors/seniors.
As a result, there is NO expectation a HS student would be doing research. They can assist a professor or grad student in a lab and describe these duties but it’s not more valued than any other job that requires being reliable, detail-oriented, precise, a good communicator, working with adults, etc. (depending on the position)
Many thanks
