Importance of the bachelor's degree

Hey all.

I’ve got a problem which I think could really use some help from you parents. I’ve been offered a direct MA (honors) for psychology and business studies at the U. of Edinburgh. There is also another offer from UCL for a BSc in psych which will take one year less to complete. I’m more inclined towards Edinburgh at the moment because its “college community” seems more tight-knit. But everyone says UCL is more prestigious and so on. I don’t really mind the prestige factor that much, but do you think that in this case it would affect my graduate/job prospects? Having been in the workforce yourselves, what would you with the benefit of hindsight?

Thanks for your time! :)

If you went to Edinburgh you would not receive a bachelor’s degree at all, but simply receive a Master’s at the conclusion of your course?

Yes, apparently there are several courses like that in the Scottish system.

These days a bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a H.S. degree, (and yes, they used to call them that), of forty years ago. Either get a trade or a B. A./S… Better a trade.

I spoke to a friend who’s son is in the same situation except at St Andrews. She told me because the public school education lasted 2 more years your education in a Scottish, or British, University was essentially the last 2 years of a US undergrad plus a masters. I think she is a reliable source since she teaches in the US and has her PHD in philosophy form St. Andrews.

Are you asking about any problems that might arise from having a master’s degree instead of a bachelor’s degree, or are you asking about the future impact of choosing Edinburgh over UCL? (You are American?)

I’m actually both these questions actually. It just seems a bit “too good” for them to give me an unconditional offer to take my masters-- is there a catch somewhere? But yes, more importantly-- how do you imagine picknig one over the other will impact my future education/career prospects? I’m Asian, by the way. And thanks, SRMom3.
