Important Advice for FA

Small tidbit, but important.

If you don’t put your SSN on your application, your FAFSA/PROFILE won’t get matched with your application, and they will be marked as missing. I found that out the hard way, after I got acceptences. Make sure not to make this mistake!

better yet, do the fafsa online, you can’t forget your ss#

Are you talking about SS# being put on your application when you apply to the college or on the FAFSA/PROFILE ?

If the colleges assign you a student ID# for all the record keeping why do they want your SS# ?

One of our teachers was mentioning the other day to not be using your SS# for an identification card.

The SS# is required on the FAFSA because it is a federal application. The Department of Education will never do away with requiring the SS#. That is how they run citizenship, default, veteran, etc checks to make sure that the applicants are qualified for financial aid. While most schools do not use the SS# as an identifier, SS#'s will still be required on initial applications there as well because that is the primary way of identifying a student. Because Financial Aid Offices deal with loans and the DOE, we will continue requesting SS#'s on paperwork, in some magnitude to ensure we are processing the right paperwork. Quite honestly, I have several students with the same name…who can’t tell me their Student ID #. Also…in the very beginning of the application process, students do not always have an ID number yet…and information can easily be overlooked if we are only looking at the student’s name.

I meant to write it on your application to the colleges. Every school I applied to transfer to ended up losing my FAFSA/PROFILE because they never matched it up with my application.

It is important to fill out the college applications completely. As you found out, it can delay for prevent vital information from reaching you.

CommonApp tells you the SSN is optional. The application was filled out completely.
