Just thought it would be good to share what I learned today…

D and I were going to add one more school to the FAFSA (to make 11) but before we did I decided to call and make sure it would be ok. I was told that once you delete a school, the information is no longer available to the school you deleted. There is no way for that school to access your information it will be GONE!

I was advised to either contact the school I am deleting to make sure they would not need to access the information again for any reason, or to contact the school I wanted to add and ask them if they would accept a printout of the SAR in the mail. The person I talked to said that it was an online system and that schools did not download or save the report. I had assumed that the schools downloaded the report. Does anyone else have information regarding this?

singermom1 - thank you for this. I also deleted and added schools because that seemed to be the general advise given here on CC. But I was concerned because on the FAFSA it warns you that reports will not be sent to deleted schools and I asked a question about that here on CC.

I should have called FAFSA directly before deleting the schools.

This morning when I checked to see if the 2nd SAR was processed (before reading your post) I saw this in the FAQ:

What is the difference between my PIN and my Data Release Number (DRN)?
DRN: Your Data Release Number (DRN) will appear in the lower left hand corner of your Student Aid Report (SAR). You will need the DRN if you contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center to make corrections to your mailing address or the schools you listed on your FAFSA. The DRN also allows you to release your FAFSA data to schools you did not list on your original FAFSA.

So going by this it is not necessary to delete any schools…it seems that all you need to do is forward your DRN to additional schools.

Right now I am in damage control and emailing all the schools to make sure that they actually were able to get the SAR before I deleted them.

to singermom:
so i just called the fafsa number, 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243), and apparently you are misled.
I talked to the representative because I have 15 schools, and she said that once you delete a school, the information WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE. She said the school have the information downloaded off. She said that’s a confusion because she said when you ADD/delete schools, it remains there. But when you Make CORRECTIONS such as “update your taxes, etc etc” then that information wont be given to all the schools. Again, I asked her like 5 times and she said IT DOES SAVE ON to all the schools, when you add/delete schools.

singermom1 - I called also. The gentleman I spoke to said that the way we did it (deleting the first 10 schools etc…) is correct. He said that the first 10 will get the report.

In addition, so far the first 3 of the 10 schools that we deleted have said that they did receive the FAFSA report. So I guess the deleting is the right way to do it.
