Impossible? loop holes?

I love the acting program at rutgers but i am hearing so many things about admission to rugters.

What is the minimum GPA?
Is it harder to get in if your Out of state?

Everyones telling me Rugters is near ivy legue yet i hear people saying how easy it is to get into please some clear this up.

From what I know now, certain schools in RU are more competitive than others. For example, the Pharmacy and Business schools are very competitive. A guide on my last RU tour said that it is much easier to get into the School of Art.

Apparently the School of Arts and Sciences is the least competitive since it’s the liberal arts school. Now, about Mason Gross of the Arts (since you state “acting” program) . . . don’t know too much about it, but you have to audition so there is a bit of competitiveness there in terms of admission.

Apparently the story about Rutgers that years, years, YEARS ago (so most likely not this century or the previous) they declined the offer of being recognized as an Ivy League school.

In this day and age, it’s safe to say that Rutgers is not on the same caliber as, say, Harvard or Princeton. Will it ever be? Don’t know. But it will not happen anytime soon. One of the many reasons being that Rutgers tend to admit students with less-than-stellar SAT scores and low GPAs.

This does not make the school as being easy to get into however.

It’s easy in the sense that if you have anything above a 3.5 GPA, live in Jersey, and have at least a 1700 cumulative on the SATs, then you have a good chance of getting admitted, especially if you are applying to the School of Arts and Sciences (You don’t see people saying “You’ll definitely get in, man!!!” for the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy school, for example)

We have our share of idiots at this school, but there are the academically motivated ones that help balance it out :)

Rutgers isn’t even CLOSE to an Ivy.
What you hear is just the rumour that Rutgers was invited to join the Ivy league a million years ago, but declined because it believed in education for all so it remained a public institution and became the stat university of NJ.

They accept almost everyone with a GPA of above a 2.5 i think although Pharm, Business, Engineering, and Mason Gross school of the arts are pretty competitive; you should have a pretty strong resume, and if you’re not sure APPLY EARLY.

Rutgers theater program is one to the best in the country. They audtion over 1000 people for 20 or so spots. It is very difficult to get into. Look at the theater portion of College Confidential to get information on theater programs. Lots of good information…

For what it is worth, according to the Rutgers website last fall, the most important admissions factor for Mason Gross admissions is your audition/portfolio, rather than SATs or GPAs. I expect you still need to demonstrate enough academic capability so that you can keep up, though I also expect the vast majority of Mason Gross students would qualify for admission to SAS anyway.

Auditions for all the arts programs at MGSA are highly competitive, but from the outside looking in I’d guess (as the father of a BFA dance major) that theatre is the most competitive. Good luck
