So I just finished my second year a the University of Michigan with a liberal arts major. However, I want to transfer to a musical theater program. I really can’t stand school anymore, and I realized I have to pursue my passion.

I’m 19, and two years into college, but is transferring to a MT program completely impossible??

NOTHING is impossible if you are determined to work very hard. Yes, from what we have all heard, it is difficult to transfer into some BFA programs, but it is never impossible. And there are many BA programs that would accept you if all else fails.

What is important is that you are willing to do the hard work and research necessary. CC will be a good jumping off place and you can get some good advice here but you will have to contact the schools directly to find out the chances of transferring into their MT programs.

Good luck! You can do it if you want it badly enough!

My d transferred after two years at a private liberal arts college into a conservatory BFA program in musical theatre. However she was a vocal performance major, had four semesters of theory and many years of piano on her application. Even with that she is having to do 3 years for a total of five years of undergraduate. It was a very costly move!~

I want to add that I have a niece who graduated three years ago with a BA in History and a minor in theatre. While in school she took dance and voice on the side. She was in local theatre at every opportunity. Summers she worked summer stock. Since graduation she has been employed almost steadily touring or in regional theatre. Why, a BA in history? She had a full ride academic scholarship and also a passion for history.
I think a history, Psych, English, liberal Arts etc. background build layers for an actor to draw upon.

An actor in a recent musical at a nonprofit equity theatre I am associated with is a Michigan grad who was not a theatre major. He loved going to school there and once graduated started auditioning and having success. That said he is super talented and a wonderful singer. There are many paths to achieving your dream
