Impressions

Ways to impress the admissions office at berkeley? I’m a freshman in high school and I’ve got three years ahead of me. Aside from good grades, I self teach quantum mechanics, string theory, etc. This summer I plan on building a telescope from scratch, on my own. Next year I’ll be captain of the science team. I also travel all over the world. I play many sports. I’m on the school band. This summer for community service I’m doing a week of trail crew up in the white mountains. Is all of this enough?

You’re off to a great start! But honestly, you should invest your time in more creative activities. For the next three years, try not to focus too much on the academics, but on an assortment of unique, totally unrelated skills. Try learning how to train monkeys, or serpents. If you want to have any shot in the dark, definitely learn falconry. Something that makes for a great essay is if you lose something that’s important to you, so I mean either you could wait for something big to happen or just “accidentally” get your non-writing arm chopped off in a mechanical disaster.

But the key is to show you’re not a dweeb, so definitely lay off all academics to the next few years. Try to get a lot of C’s and B’s to show admission’s you’re “average” yet you can do all the great things mentioned above!

Talk about impressions! Best of luck!

The thing is, I’m the epitome of a nerd, yet I’m not. I’m very social ad well. I do rock climbing and ice climbing too. I plan to climb Mt. Rainier. Would that be different?

lawl!!!^^ thats a very good way to get an impression!! maybe get some F’s along the way…and get a 2400 on ur SAT then ur impression will never be forgettn by the admission officers

Yeah… Sounds smart…

You can be even more impressive by trying to figure out how the school should get out of debt instead of these fruitless protests. And then you can take on North Korea and any other Middle East problems during your senior year!

You’ll still probably be rejected by Berkeley. Because they know you’re too good to take their offer. Bahaha

You shouldn’t let anyone on this website determine what you are going to do. Trust me, it’s truly futile to do things solely for the purpose of getting into a good college. Here’s what you do: do what you are interested in, take leadership positions in it, document it well so that there’s no doubt that you did it, and get involved in your community. Basically just do what you’re interested in, but do it through official venues(school clubs, teams, etc.). Pair that with solid academics and you’ll get in.

This is coming from a kid who got into both UCLA and UC Berkeley with a 2120 SAT and top 3% rank. But the reason I got in is because I did what I wanted to and created clubs, took the initiative, and wrote a good essay. Trust me, I was like you once, but I noticed I was becoming a cookie-cutter, boring applicant while doing stuff I didn’t want to do. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Thank you for understanding, haha.
